Defender Dakar Concept Roars to Life: Street-Legal Rally Racer on the Horizon!
Land Rover is set to launch a limited-edition, street-legal rally racer next year, previewed by the Defender Dakar Design Concept. Based on the Dakar Rally-winning D7X-R, this new model promises rally car engineering for the street, featuring robust suspension, unique wheels, and a powerful 626 hp V-8 engine.
Land Rover's Defender subbrand has officially unveiled the Defender Dakar Design Preview, a concept vehicle that strongly hints at a forthcoming production-ready, street-legal rally racer. This limited-edition model, expected to launch next year, is directly inspired by and based on the Dakar Rally–winning D7X-R.
The journey to a street-legal rally car began eight months prior when MotorTrend exclusively reported on Land Rover's ambitions. Now, the company has showcased a "nearly finished concept car," confirming their intent to bring rally car engineering to the everyday road.
Building a street-legal version of a rally car is not as daunting a task for Land Rover as it might seem, thanks to Dakar Rally regulations. These rules stipulate that race vehicles must utilize a stock body and chassis, a stock engine, and stock transmission and differential cases, although strengthened components and custom suspension setups (bolting into stock mounting points) are permitted. Consequently, the D7X-R, the rally-winning machine, is essentially an upgraded version of the Defender Octa.
The suspension system presented the most significant engineering challenge. Defender engineers opted to replace the standard air springs and hydraulic dampers found in some models with a more robust and simpler setup of coil springs and gas dampers for the D7X-R. The race vehicle incorporated additional dampers and stiffer springs in the rear to compensate for the substantial weight of a 145-gallon fuel tank, tools, spare parts, and spare tires—a necessity that will not carry over to the production model. The street-legal Defender Dakar is confirmed to continue using coil springs paired with Bilstein dampers.
Regarding wheels and tires, the production Defender Dakar will feature new 21-inch wheels wrapped in 35-inch tires. This contrasts with the race vehicles, which ran smaller 17-inch wheels equipped with 35-inch BFGoodrich off-road race tires. Despite the production vehicle's smaller sidewalls, it is expected to offer similar wheel travel and ground clearance. The D7X-R already boasted wheel travel comparable to a stock Octa (which typically uses 20- to 22-inch wheels with 33-inch tires) due to its larger-diameter tires, and an impressive 1.9 inches of additional ground clearance, totaling 14.6 inches. This enhanced ground clearance is likely to be retained in the production Defender Dakar, surpassing the Octa's 12.7 inches in its tallest setting.
The drivetrain adaptation, by comparison, is less complex. The D7X-R race car utilized the stock BMW 4.4-liter twin-turbo V-8 engine, but detuned to 400 horsepower to comply with class rules. For the production version, Defender has confirmed it will deliver the full 626 horsepower output of the Octa. Interestingly, the company states the Defender Dakar will produce up to 553 lb-ft of torque, which is slightly less than the Octa's 590 lb-ft. However, it remains unconfirmed whether the production vehicle will inherit the race car's stronger transmission gears, differential gears, and axle half-shafts, or if it will revert to the Octa's electronically controlled differentials instead of the race car's mechanical limited-slip differentials.
