Major Artists Unite: Denzel Curry, My Bloody Valentine & Shygirl Back 'No Music For Genocide' Boycott

The "No Music For Genocide" movement has rapidly gained momentum, enlisting over 1,000 artists and labels, including notable names like Denzel Curry, My Bloody Valentine, Shygirl, and Clairo, in a cultural boycott targeting Israel. This initiative calls upon artists and music rights-holders to remove their music catalogs from streaming services and geo-block their content within Israel, expressing solidarity with the Palestinian people.
The movement, which initially launched in September with more than 400 signatories, has seen its urgency amplified by reports of nearly 500 alleged ceasefire violations by Israel since a U.S.-led ceasefire deal in October. This deal aimed to halt two years of devastating bombing in Gaza. The broader conflict context includes the Oct. 7, 2023, surprise attack by Hamas militants on Israel, which resulted in nearly 2,000 deaths and 251 hostages. This was followed by an Israeli bombing campaign in the Gaza Strip that, according to Palestinian authorities, killed over 69,000 Palestinians and injured 170,000, leveling vast structures and causing a severe hunger crisis. A shaky ceasefire was signed on October 10 as a preliminary step toward a potential peace agreement.
Drawing parallels to the successful music boycotts against apartheid South Africa, "No Music For Genocide" explicitly states its refusal to allow the music industry's presence in "apartheid Israel" to gain access to their art. The group firmly rejects the use of cultural work and influence to normalize what they describe as Israel’s "criminal occupation, genocide, forced displacement, torture, and imprisonment without charge." The organizers emphasize that music, while a universal language, is inherently politicized, and the critical question lies in whether its politicization advances true justice.
Among the prominent artists who have committed to removing their music from Israeli streaming platforms are Vacations, Innvervisions, YHWN Nailgun, Lucy Dacus, Wolf Alice, Of Monsters and Men, Lorde, Hayley Williams, Paramore, Björk, MUNA, and Paloma Faith, further underscoring the widespread support for the boycott.
As the cultural boycott gains traction, the on-the-ground situation remains precarious. At press time, the fragile ceasefire appeared to hold, despite Israel continuing to conduct strikes inside Gaza. These strikes were reportedly in response to an alleged violation of terms by a Hamas gunman who purportedly opened fire on Israeli troops in Southern Gaza.
In addition to the boycott efforts, the "No Music For Genocide" movement held its first fundraiser recently in New York. The event successfully raised $7,000, with all proceeds directly channeled to mutual aid programs and family lifeline funds supporting communities in Gaza and the occupied West Bank.
