Local Artist Triumphs: Uzoma Dunkwu Secures Emmy for Marvel's 'Eyes of Wakanda' Design!

Nigerian artist Uzoma Dunkwu has been awarded an Emmy for Outstanding Individual Achievement in Animation, Character Design. This prestigious recognition was specifically for his character design work on Marvel Animation’s “Eyes of Wakanda,” particularly for the episode titled “Into the Lion’s Den” from the Disney+ animated series. The Television Academy announced Dunkwu as one of the 2026 juried Emmy winners in August, with the formal presentation occurring during the Creative Arts Emmy ceremonies held in Los Angeles in September.

Unlike the traditional competitive Emmy categories, juried awards are unique in that recipients are selected by panels of industry professionals. These panels have the discretion to choose one, multiple, or no honorees. This award signifies a significant milestone for Dunkwu, whose distinguished creative career has largely been cultivated from Lagos, Nigeria.

Dunkwu operates as a versatile visual development artist, character designer, animation director, and educator. Despite initially studying electrical and electronics engineering at the University of Benin, he independently honed his artistic capabilities. His professional journey subsequently led him into the fields of comics, illustration, concept art, and animation. His impressive portfolio includes collaborations with major industry players such as Marvel, Netflix, and Disney. He holds character design credits for “Eyes of Wakanda” and also for the animated series “Iyanu” and “Iyanu: The Age of Wonders.”

His involvement with the production of “Eyes of Wakanda” commenced in August 2021, where he began as an early concept artist. Under the guidance of Todd Harris, Dunkwu was instrumental in the initial character ideation, developing early designs for five Dora Milaje characters, including Noni. These foundational designs played a crucial role in shaping the character designs across the entire series, under the subsequent supervision of Joshua James Shaw. Dunkwu further refined the character of Noni and contributed designs to all four episodes, featuring characters such as Old Noni, Kuda, Tafari, High Councilman Rakim, an 1885 Wakandan Queen, Lion Captain, and various crowd characters.

“Eyes of Wakanda” premiered on Disney+ in August 2025. The four-episode animated series, created by Todd Harris—who also served as its director and executive producer—explores the narratives of Wakandan warriors dispatched globally to retrieve vibranium artifacts. Ryan Coogler was also among the executive producers. Dunkwu’s Emmy triumph places him among notable Nigerian creatives to receive accolades from the Television Academy for their contributions to international productions.
