Latin Music Stars Unite for Colombia & Venezuela Earthquake Relief Efforts
A powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake has devastated Colombia's Pacific Coast, exacerbating a crisis following earlier tremors in Venezuela, leading to significant loss of life and widespread destruction. The music industry has united, with numerous artists and organizations launching benefit concerts and fundraising campaigns to provide humanitarian aid, rebuild homes, and support affected families in both nations.
Colombia is currently grappling with the devastating aftermath of a 7.4-magnitude earthquake, the highest recorded in the country during the 21st century. The tremor struck Colombia’s Pacific Coast on Monday, with its epicenter located in San José del Palmar, Chocó, approximately 150 miles west of Bogotá. This catastrophic event followed closely on the heels of two 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude earthquakes that hit Venezuela six weeks prior in June.
The human toll of the Colombian earthquake is severe: as of Thursday, at least 281 people had died, 3,900 had been injured, and nearly 400 remained missing, with civilian databases listing over 4,200 individuals unaccounted for. The structural damage is extensive, with 10,600 homes completely destroyed and another 65,800 damaged. Rescue efforts have continued amidst declining hopes of finding additional survivors.
In response to this immense humanitarian crisis affecting both Colombia and Venezuela, the music industry has rapidly mobilized. Artists from the United States, Colombia, Puerto Rico, Cuba, and Venezuela are collaborating, leveraging their influence and music to raise crucial funds for affected communities and organizations. High-profile Colombian artists such as Maluma, Karol G, Feid, Carlos Vives, Shakira, Camilo, and Greeicy have actively used social media to raise awareness and offer support.
Several key events and initiatives are underway to bolster earthquake relief efforts:
