Lake Kariba Tragedy: Overloaded Boat Sinks, Leaving 15 Dead, Dozens Missing

A tragic incident unfolded on Lake Kariba on Tuesday afternoon, August 11, 2026, when the District Development Fund (DDF) boat named 'Mbuya Nehanda' capsized. The accident, which occurred while the dilapidated vessel was sailing from Kariba to Chalala fishing camps, has resulted in 15 confirmed fatalities and dozens of people still missing.
According to an official report by Cecilia Chitiyo, Director of Local Government in the Office of the Minister of State for Mashonaland West Provincial Affairs and Devolution and chair of the Provincial Civil Protection Unit (CPU), the boat was severely overloaded at the time of the tragedy. The 'Mbuya Nehanda' has a carrying capacity of 90 passengers; however, the report confirmed that it had 114 adult passengers on board, verifiable through ticket sales, along with 5 crew members and an undisclosed number of children below ticketing age. Sources close to the incident have further speculated that the vessel, which was reportedly donated to the government in 1985 and has been operational since, may have been carrying approximately 165 people, nearly double its official capacity.
Immediate rescue operations commenced, with Matusadonha rescue teams and other responders successfully bringing 77 passengers to safety. These survivors were initially taken to Long Island on the lake, and the CPU has mobilized additional boats to transport them to the mainland. Tragically, 15 bodies have been retrieved so far, and funeral services companies Nyaradzo and Doves Funeral Parlours have been engaged to collect and process the deceased. Based on the confirmed numbers, approximately 27 individuals remain unaccounted for. A sub-aqua unit has been airlifted to the scene to conduct intensified search and rescue operations, and the death toll is regrettably expected to rise.
The Provincial Civil Protection Unit has recommended that this accident be declared a state of disaster. Meanwhile, ZRP national spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi has issued a plea to the public and media, urging them to exercise caution and allow authorities to verify the exact numbers of those on board, the injured, the deceased, and the survivors. Commissioner Nyathi assured Zimbabweans and the relatives of the Kariba boat accident victims that official information would be released in due course, once the scene management process is complete, emphasizing the importance of allowing authorities to manage the situation professionally without interference or distortion of figures.
