Labour Turmoil: Over 100 MPs Demand Starmer Resignation
Deep divisions are rocking the Labour party following disappointing May election results, as mounting calls for Keir Starmer's resignation clash with a strong show of support from over 100 MPs. Various factions, driven by electoral frustration, reshuffle grievances, and differing views on leadership transition, are pushing for change, while loyalists advocate for stability and focus on governance amid the internal turmoil. The Labour Party is facing deep internal division following the May elections, with Keir Starmer’s leadership coming under intense pressure. More than 80 Labour MPs have publicly called for him to step down, while over 100 MPs have also signed a separate statement opposing a leadership contest.
The conflicting positions have exposed a fractured Parliamentary Labour Party struggling to agree on the party’s direction after disappointing election results. Much of the backlash is driven by frustration over Labour’s poor electoral performance and growing resentment within the party.
Several MPs have openly blamed Starmer for the outcome, while others point to tensions linked to last year’s reshuffle, including the fallout from Angela Rayner’s resignation. Critics argue that the reshuffle alienated experienced figures and damaged trust, with MPs such as Catherine West and others highlighting a perceived lack of vision and connection to grassroots concerns.
Two leadership camps are now emerging within the party, one pushing for a swift transition led by allies of Wes Streeting and another supporting a more gradual process that could allow Andy Burnham to enter the race.
The Socialist Campaign Group has also added pressure, consistently calling for Starmer’s resignation from the left of the party. Despite the unrest, Starmer has refused to step down, insisting no formal leadership challenge has been triggered, while senior cabinet figures have publicly backed him and warned that prolonged uncertainty could damage stability and investor confidence.
