Kyrie Irving's $11,001 Surprise: NBA Star Buys LaRussell's Album in Epic Show of Support

Bay Area rapper LaRussell is charting an innovative course for independent artists, focusing on a direct-to-consumer model to sell his music directly to fans. This approach seeks to bypass traditional streaming models, empowering artists with more control over their distribution and revenue.
LaRussell's groundbreaking strategy has garnered significant attention and support from high-profile celebrities. NBA star Kyrie Irving notably contributed $11,001 for LaRussell’s upcoming album, "Something’s in the Water," via the EVEN platform. LaRussell was surprised to wake up to this record payment, soon discovering it was from the Dallas Mavericks superstar. During LaRussell’s livestream, Irving personally lauded the rapper for his trailblazing efforts in the independent music space, stating, “You earned it. You deserve it. You worked your ass off so I thought I would just contribute. I know you will pay it forward… I’m putting my money where my mouth is.”
The initial response to LaRussell's new album has been remarkable. Within the first 24 hours of its release, he generated $57,000 from 2,600 fans, with an average album sale price of $22, although fans can pay as little as $1. LaRussell has set an ambitious goal to sell 100,000 copies of his album within 30 days, demonstrating the potential of this fan-centric approach.
Further amplifying the movement, West Coast legend Snoop Dogg also showed his support, donating $2,500 for the album. Snoop Dogg expressed his admiration on X, writing, “Had 2 do it!!! nefew [LaRussell] changin tha game.” LaRussell, in turn, shared his gratitude on Instagram, acknowledging Snoop Dogg’s influence on his own career: “UNCLE SNOOP BOUGHT AN ALBUM FOR $2,500!!!! It feels so good knowing those who came before me and paved a way for me to do what I do respects my art and my grind. I wouldn’t do what I do today If I never watched Snoop performing on the Up In Smoke DVD!!! That DVD kicked off my desire to rap!! I’M GRATEFUL Thank You @snoopdogg.” Comedian Cedric the Entertainer also contributed, paying $1,000 for the album, and several of LaRussell’s peers, including E-40, Symba, and Drumma Boy, have openly saluted his vision.
LaRussell shared insights into his motivation, stating, “The possibility of failing publicly and having to live in that. Aim for something that you might miss, because who you become along that journey is what really matters. You don’t know what’s going to make you until you do something that could break you as well.” This philosophy underscores his commitment to taking risks for personal and artistic growth. He is also known for releasing music at a vociferous pace, having put out seven albums in a recent year, including his "Good Ethica" project with Ethika Music.
This direct-to-consumer model has historical precedents within the rap community. The late Nipsey Hussle notably implemented a variation of this strategy in 2013, selling his "Crenshaw" mixtape for $100. That initiative garnered support from industry giants like Jay-Z, who famously purchased 100 copies, demonstrating the enduring appeal and potential of direct artist-to-fan engagement.
