King of Pop Reigns Supreme: Michael Jackson Marks Unprecedented 100 Weeks at #1!

More than four decades after its initial release, Michael Jackson's seminal album *Thriller* continues to make history, vaulting the King of Pop into new record books. The landmark album has now spent an impressive 39th nonconsecutive week at No. 1 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, as of May 23. This latest achievement brings Michael Jackson's cumulative total weeks at No. 1 across his nine chart-topping albums to a remarkable 100 weeks, making him the first solo artist in the chart's 61-year history to reach this triple-digit milestone.
For its most recent week atop the charts, *Thriller* garnered 66,000 equivalent album units during the tracking period of May 8-14 in the United States, according to data from Luminate. This represented a 6% increase in units compared to the album's performance in the previous week. The iconic album, originally released in 1982, reclaimed the top spot last week for the first time since 1984. This significant resurgence is attributed to a massive surge in Jackson’s overall streaming catalog, impacting all his songs, driven by enthusiastic fan reaction to the recently released Michael biopic.
This renewed interest has propelled Michael Jackson to new streaming heights for his solo material. For the fourth consecutive week, he achieved a new best streaming week career high in U.S. official on-demand streams. His impressive sum of 190.4 million streams for May 8-14 followed previous record-breaking weeks: 181.6 million (May 1-7), 137.6 million (April 24-30), and 55.9 million (April 17-23).
With *Thriller* maintaining its crown, Jackson solidifies his place in music history, claiming the second-best career total for weeks at No. 1 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. He trails only the legendary group The Temptations, whose 17 No. 1 albums collectively spent 109 weeks in the top position. Michael Jackson's entry into the triple-digit club is a testament to the enduring success of his nine No. 1 albums, which include:
- 16 weeks: *Off the Wall* (1979-80)
- 39 weeks: *Thriller* (1983-84; 2026)
- 18 weeks: *Bad* (1987-88)
- 12 weeks: *Dangerous* (1992)
- two weeks: *HIStory: Past Present and Future Book 1* (1995)
- four weeks: *Invincible* (2001)
- four weeks: *Michael Jackson’s This Is It Soundtrack* (2009)
- two weeks: *Michael* (2011)
- three weeks: *Xscape* (2014)
In its original era, *Thriller* initially set a record with 37 weeks at No. 1 in 1983-84, propelled by classic singles such as “Billie Jean,” “Beat It,” and the title track. This record stood for 41 years until SZA’s *SOS*, reinforced by its *SOS Deluxe: LANA* edition, surpassed it in June 2025 and extended its run to a total of 46 weeks at the top.
Currently, “Billie Jean” leads Jackson’s song catalog, holding strong at No. 3 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart for the second consecutive week. Other *Thriller* tracks are also performing exceptionally well, with “Human Nature” climbing from No. 6 to No. 4 and “Beat It” moving from No. 7 to No. 6. In a career-best achievement, Michael Jackson currently has 14 songs simultaneously featured on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart in a single week, underscoring the immense and lasting popularity of his musical legacy.
