Kenya’s Parliament Rocked by Rebel MP Purge as Political Showdown Looms

Recent political developments in Kenya have triggered sweeping committee reshuffles targeting elected officials at both national and county levels, raising concerns over internal party discipline and political supremacy battles.

At the National Assembly of Kenya, several lawmakers perceived as dissenters within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) were reassigned in what observers describe as a purge of ‘rebel MPs.’

Among those affected was Ruth Odinga, who was moved from the influential Agriculture Committee to the less strategic Members’ Services and Facilities Committee.

Caroli Omondi was removed as chairperson of the Constitutional Implementation Oversight Committee and reassigned to the Sports and Culture Committee, with William Kamket taking over his leadership role.

Similarly, Anthony Kibagendi was transferred from his vice chairmanship of the Public Investments Committee on Governance and Education, replaced by Ong’ondo Boyd Were, further reinforcing perceptions of targeted political restructuring.

Beyond these moves, the reshuffle extended across multiple parliamentary committees, affecting numerous MPs and altering the balance of influence within key oversight and legislative bodies.

Several lawmakers were reassigned, replaced, or newly appointed across committees including Constitutional Implementation Oversight, Regional Development, National Cohesion and Equal Opportunity, Public Petitions, Justice and Legal Affairs, and Tourism and Wildlife.

These changes reflect deeper internal realignments within Kenya’s political landscape, where committee assignments serve as critical instruments of legislative authority and political leverage.

The restructuring also followed vacancies caused by deaths and strategic repositioning, but the removal and reassignment of certain lawmakers widely perceived as dissenters has intensified speculation about party control, discipline, and loyalty enforcement within ODM and broader parliamentary politics.

At the county level, a parallel power struggle unfolded in Homa Bay County, where four Members of County Assembly were removed from committees amid an alleged supremacy battle between Governor Gladys Wanga and Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo.

The affected MCAs claimed their removal was retaliation for meeting Omollo to discuss governance and political matters, including President William Ruto’s re-election campaign.

They described the decision as politically motivated and illegal, arguing that engaging government officials should not warrant punitive action.

However, County Assembly Speaker Polycarp Okombo denied these claims, stating the removals were based solely on violations of standing orders and aimed at improving committee performance.

The developments at both national and county levels underscore escalating political tensions, where committee reshuffles are increasingly viewed not merely as administrative adjustments, but as tools for consolidating authority and managing internal dissent.
