Damson Idris Revs Up! British-Nigerian Actor Becomes Formula 1 Global Ambassador

British-Nigerian actor Damson Idris has officially been appointed as Formula 1’s Global Brand Ambassador, a natural progression given his deep involvement and passion for the sport over the past year. This significant role solidifies his connection to the world of elite motorsport, which began prominently with his starring role in the critically acclaimed film, “F1: The Movie.”

Idris starred alongside Hollywood icon Brad Pitt in “F1: The Movie,” portraying the rookie driver Joshua Pearce opposite Pitt’s Sonny Hayes. The film distinguished itself by being shot during actual Grand Prix weekends, with both actors genuinely behind the wheel of modified Formula 2 cars, adding an unprecedented layer of authenticity to the racing sequences. This immersive approach resonated with audiences globally, propelling the film to become the most successful sports movie of all time, grossing over $630 million at the box office and even securing a Best Picture Oscar nomination. The movie not only cemented Idris’s acting prowess but also introduced him to the intricate world of Formula 1, fostering a genuine appreciation for its culture and intensity.

Beyond his cinematic contributions, Damson Idris has repeatedly demonstrated his affinity for Formula 1 through high-profile appearances. A memorable instance was his grand entrance at the 2025 Met Gala in New York City. Arriving in a custom white Tommy Hilfiger race car, he dramatically emerged from the vehicle in a full F1 racing suit, complete with a Swarovski crystal-encrusted helmet. This striking initial ensemble was then dramatically shed to reveal a bold red tartan three-piece tuxedo. The bespoke suit, designed for the "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style" theme, was adorned with gold-beaded lapels, a brooch, and a chain-link necklace, all from his personal jewellery line, DIDRIS, serving as a poignant tribute to his Nigerian heritage and his late mother, Silifat Idris. His fashion choices underscored a fusion of motorsport glamour, personal identity, and high-fashion.

Stefano Domenicali, President and CEO of Formula 1, expressed his enthusiasm for the appointment, stating, “I’m delighted to welcome Damson Idris officially to the Formula 1 family. Following his starring role in ‘F1: The Movie,’ which made history at the box office and helped bring our sport to new audiences, he is joining us as an official Global Brand Ambassador.” Domenicali emphasized the importance of authenticity in Formula 1 and noted Idris’s genuine passion for the sport and shared vision for its growth. He added that Idris’s “incredible platform and position in the entertainment and lifestyle space” would be instrumental in reaching new fans.

Idris himself conveyed his excitement about the new role, remarking, “I’ve always been drawn to spaces where culture, performance, and precision meet, and Formula 1 sits right at the centre of that.” He elaborated on his deepened understanding of the sport, stating that getting closer to it gave him “a real understanding of the innovation, the heart, and the intensity behind everything, and the elite level the drivers operate at.” He expressed pride in representing something that inspires and connects people globally.

In his capacity as Global Brand Ambassador, Damson Idris will actively participate in Grands Prix events, lend his support to various content and promotional initiatives, and play a crucial role in attracting a new generation of enthusiasts to the sport. His commitment was further highlighted by his recent appearance alongside all 22 drivers in F1’s new “All To Drive For” campaign, which premiered just days prior to this ambassadorial announcement. While his focus will be heavily on Formula 1, Idris also has upcoming projects off-track, including a role in Tomi Adeyemi‘s “Children of Blood and Bone,” directed by Gina Prince–Bythewood, set for release in January 2027, and portraying Miles Davis in Bill Pohlad‘s “Miles & Juliette” opposite Anamaria Vartolomei.
