Kenya's Fiscal Firestorm: Ruto Administration Accused of Massive Budget Overruns

The State House has incurred significant expenditures, reaching Sh10.4 billion within the first seven months of the 2025/26 financial year. This amount represents a substantial overshoot, being nearly a third more than its total annual allocation of Sh7 billion. This overspending comes at a critical time when the National Treasury has reported a widening revenue shortfall, casting considerable doubt on the government’s ability to meet its fiscal projections and manage its finances effectively.
In response to these figures, President William Ruto has faced accusations of misusing State House funds, particularly for campaign activities. Critics contend that such a diversion of resources undermines the government's financial discipline and will inevitably harm various development projects intended for the public good. The disparity between the allocated budget and actual expenditure highlights a concerning trend of fiscal indiscipline within State House, further exacerbated by the nation's broader revenue challenges.
