Kefas Makes Bold Move: Governor Joins APC, Meets President!

Taraba State Governor Agbu Kefas recently made his inaugural visit to the Presidential Villa in Abuja since his significant defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). This pivotal meeting, held on Monday, saw Governor Kefas engaging with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in a closed-door session. He arrived at approximately 2 pm in the company of the APC national chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda.
The visit underscores the political ramifications of Governor Kefas' move, which occurred just two weeks prior to this high-level meeting. His defection has not only reshaped the political landscape in Taraba State but has also provided a significant boost to the APC's ongoing efforts to solidify its influence across the North-East and Middle Belt regions, key areas for the party's ambitions leading up to the 2027 general elections.
Notably, Governor Kefas had initially scheduled a formal APC welcome ceremony for November 19. However, demonstrating a keen awareness of public sentiment, he postponed the event. He cited the abduction of schoolgirls in Maga, Kebbi State, as a national tragedy, deeming it "insensitive" to proceed with political celebrations during a period of national grief.
This defection marks a further reduction in the number of governors affiliated with the PDP, weakening the opposition party's national footprint. Governor Kefas joins a growing list of governors who have switched allegiance to the APC this year. These include Sherif Oborevwori of Delta State, Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State, Peter Mbah of Enugu State, and Senator Douye Diri of Bayelsa State. Furthermore, there are persistent rumors and claims suggesting that Caleb Muftwang, the Governor of Plateau State, might also be considering a similar move to the APC, indicating a broader trend of political realignment within Nigeria's gubernatorial ranks.
