Kapoor's Children Battle for ₹30,000 Crore Estate in High Court

A high-stakes legal battle has erupted in the Delhi High Court over the extensive estate of the late industrialist Sunjay Kapur, estimated at approximately ₹30,000 crore. His two children from his marriage to Bollywood actor Karisma Kapoor, Samaira and Kiaan Kapur, have filed a civil suit seeking their rightful share, alleging that their stepmother, Priya Kapur, attempted to forge their father's will to gain complete control over his vast assets.
The siblings, represented through their mother, Karisma Kapoor, as their legal guardian, have sought partition of the estate, rendition of accounts, and a permanent injunction against the defendants. According to their plaint, the children contend they lack complete information regarding their father's assets at the time of his death. They accuse Defendant No. 1, Priya Kapur, of concealing details and failing to disclose the full extent of the estate, despite providing a schedule of known properties.
The lawsuit names several key defendants: Priya Kapur, Sunjay Kapur's widow and third wife, along with her minor son Azarias, both residing at the family's farmhouse in Rajokri. Also named are Sunjay Kapur's mother, Rani Kapur, who lives at the same residence, and Shradha Suri Marwah, a woman identified as the executor of the contested will. The children allege that Priya Kapur initially denied the existence of any will, asserting that all assets were held under the R.K. Family Trust. However, they claim she later presented a document dated March 21, 2025, which she described as a will, raising suspicions of forgery and manipulation. The lawsuit further claims that the defendants conspired with Dinesh Agarwal and Nitin Sharma to suppress an original will before revealing the alleged forged document to the family on July 30, 2025. The plaintiffs assert that the purported will is 'not a legal and valid document, is forged and fabricated and in any event surrounded by suspicious circumstances,' noting that neither the original nor a copy has been provided to them.
The children maintain they shared a close relationship with their father until his sudden demise on June 12, 2025, while playing polo in Windsor, UK. They performed his final rites, with Kiaan Kapur lighting the funeral pyre at Lodhi Cremation Ground on June 19. They claim their late father had repeatedly assured them of their financial security and future well-being, initiating business ventures in their names, acquiring assets personally and through corporate entities, and naming them as beneficiaries of the family trust. These assurances, they argue, were reinforced through shared vacations, business conversations, and personal interactions.
Tensions escalated following Sunjay Kapur's death, as Priya Kapur allegedly began limiting the children's access to trust-related documents and financial assets. The plaintiffs further allege they were summoned to corporate meetings of Sona BLW Precision Forgings Ltd. (Sona Comstar) and asked to sign legal paperwork without full transparency regarding the trust deed or associated records. The plea before the Delhi High Court seeks a declaration that the children are Class I legal heirs and a decree of partition granting them a one-fifth share each in their father’s assets. For the interim, the lawsuit also seeks to freeze all personal assets belonging to Sunjay Kapur until the issue is resolved.
Sunjay Kapur, who was 53 at the time of his passing, took over the empire in 2015 after his father Dr. Surinder Kapur's death. He successfully steered Sona Comstar, an auto components manufacturer, towards a market capitalization of over ₹31,000 crore (around $4 billion), significantly boosted by its involvement in the electric vehicle (EV) space. A US citizen, Sunjay Kapur joined the ranks of the World’s Billionaires in 2022, with Forbes estimating his net worth at $1.2 billion (approximately ₹10,300 crore) at the time of his death. Sona Comstar operates 12 manufacturing facilities and employs over 5,000 people across India, China, Mexico, Serbia, and the US. Sunjay Kapur was married to Karisma Kapoor from 2003-2016 and previously to fashion designer Nandita Mahtani from 1996-2000.
