Kano's Political Volcano: Yusuf-Kwankwaso Rivalry Explodes, Signaling 2027 Showdown!

Kano State, a significant political stronghold in Northern Nigeria, is currently experiencing profound political upheaval marked by a monumental shift in its power dynamics. This turbulence centers around the defection of its incumbent governor, Mallam Abba Kabir Yusuf, popularly known as Abba Gida-Gida, from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the governing All Progressives Congress (APC). This move represents a severe blow to Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the leader of the NNPP and the Kwankwasiyya Movement, who had been Governor Yusuf’s political mentor and godfather.
Governor Yusuf’s formal enlistment into the APC on Monday, January 26, 2026, was described by Senator Kwankwaso as a day of 'betrayal,' so much so that he reportedly declared January 23 as 'World Betrayal Day' in the wake of the news. Kwankwaso, a former Minister of Defence, expressed deep shock and disbelief, lamenting that despite efforts to rescue Kano from the previous APC administration, the governorship had been handed back 'free of charge'. The governor's defection, alongside a significant number of elected officials—eight National Assembly members, 22 state assembly members, and 44 local council chairmen—underscores the magnitude of the political realignment.
Explaining his decision, Governor Yusuf stated that his move to the APC was not driven by personal ambition but by the collective interest of Kano State citizens. He emphasized the necessity of aligning with the party at the center, particularly with President Bola Tinubu’s administration, to foster social welfare, enhance infrastructure, and accelerate inclusive economic development in Kano. This decision, he stressed, was for the stability, progress, and well-being of the Kano people. It is noteworthy that his defection took a while to materialize, with several postponements, indicating the gravity of leaving his long-standing political leader and pitching his tent with the Ganduje political camp, which he defeated in the 2023 Kano governorship election.
Kano’s political landscape has a history of bitter disagreements and acrimonious partings. In the Second Republic, the famous rift between Abubakar Rimi and his mentor, Malam Aminu Kano, led to a split in the People’s Redemption Party (PRP). Similarly, in the Fourth Republic, Dr. Umar Ganduje and Rabiu Kwankwaso, once close political allies and principal-deputy, eventually parted ways. Former Kano State governor, Ibrahim Shekarau, even pointed out Kwankwaso's own precedent of defecting from the PDP to the APC while serving as governor, questioning his moral standing to accuse Yusuf of betrayal.
The defection has unequivocally strengthened the APC in Kano. Key APC leaders in the state, including Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau, have relinquished their governorship ambitions to support Governor Yusuf’s re-election bid in 2027, signaling a unified front. The APC has also offered Governor Yusuf an automatic ticket for the next gubernatorial election. This consolidation of power is further bolstered by the earlier defection of Senator Kawu Sumaila from NNPP to APC in May 2025, citing internal party divisions.
For Senator Kwankwaso and the NNPP, this marks one of the greatest challenges of his political career. The party is now fractured and depleted in ranks, with its National Leader facing the arduous task of recalibrating the Kwankwasiyya Movement. While Governor Yusuf’s deputy, Samaila Gwarzo, has notably remained with the NNPP, his fate hangs in the balance amid talks of impeachment. Additionally, some commissioners and top functionaries have resigned from Governor Yusuf’s government to reaffirm their loyalty to Kwankwaso, offering some initial comfort to the embattled leader.
The path to the 2027 general election in Kano will be closely watched. A critical question revolves around who the NNPP will field against Governor Yusuf, a factor that will heavily influence the election's outcome. Furthermore, reports suggest Kwankwaso has made inflexible and unrealistic demands, allegedly seeking commitments for the 2031 presidential position, making reconciliation with the APC challenging. Despite the current setbacks and the shock of what he termed 'treachery,' political observers emphasize that Kwankwaso, with his history and influence, cannot be entirely ruled out of Kano’s complex political equation.
