Kano Political Quake: Ex-Gov Shekarau Dumps PDP, Joins APC in Strategic Power Move

Kano State has witnessed a significant political development with the formal defection of former governor and senator, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau, to the All Progressives Congress (APC). This move, announced by Shekarau himself at a political gathering in Kano, followed extensive consultations with his supporters and key stakeholders, marking a notable shift in the state’s political landscape.

Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, enthusiastically welcomed Shekarau's return, describing it as a major development that would significantly bolster the APC's position in the state. In a press statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad, Governor Yusuf highlighted that Shekarau’s return would further strengthen the party’s readiness for future elections. A formal reception for the former Governor into the APC fold is expected to be fixed soon, in consultation with the national secretariat of the party.

Governor Yusuf underscored the party's growing momentum in Kano, asserting that it continues to garner increasing support and consolidate its status as the most dominant political force. He expressed strong confidence in the APC’s preparedness for the upcoming electoral cycles, stating that the party is fully equipped to contest and secure victory in all available positions. This optimism, according to the governor, stems from what he described as a growing sense of unity and strategic political alignments within the party's ranks.

Malam Ibrahim Shekarau, who governed Kano State from 2003 to 2011, remains a prominent political figure wielding considerable grassroots influence. His long and dynamic political career has seen him move between major parties over the years, and his latest switch is widely anticipated to impact party strength and strategic calculations not only in Kano but potentially beyond. This defection aligns with a broader pattern of political realignments occurring across Nigeria as major political actors reposition themselves ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The governor further reassured party members and supporters of the leadership's unwavering focus on strengthening internal cohesion and expanding its grassroots support base throughout Kano State. He urged all party loyalists to maintain their commitment and continue mobilising support as the APC strategically prepares for future political contests.
