Kali Uchis Shines: Named 2025 ASCAP Women Behind the Music Honoree

The world of Latin music recently celebrated numerous significant milestones, from prestigious honors for influential artists to festive family moments and new educational initiatives. These events highlight the vibrant and evolving landscape of Latin music, recognizing both established legends and contemporary stars.
Kali Uchis, the acclaimed Colombian artist, was prominently recognized as a 2025 ASCAP Women Behind the Music honoree. She shares this distinction with fellow artists Kehlani and KPop Demon Hunters’ lead vocalist EJAE. Nicole George-Middleton, ASCAP Executive Vice President & Head of Creative Membership, emphasized ASCAP's commitment to spotlighting extraordinary women who are pushing boundaries across genres. Kali Uchis is set to receive her award at the 17th annual ASCAP Women Behind the Music event on Wednesday, November 12, in Los Angeles. This honor comes just weeks after her engaging Superstar Q&A session at the 2025 Billboard Latin Music Week in Miami, further cementing her influence in the industry.
In a more personal celebration, power couple Lele Pons and Guaynaa marked their first Halloween together as parents. Days before the spooky holiday, the Venezuelan social media sensation and Puerto Rican artist shared heartwarming photos of their family's themed costumes. Guaynaa transformed into Peter Pan, Lele Pons embodied Wendy Darling, and their baby girl charmingly appeared as Tinkerbell. These elaborate costumes were specially designed by Karina Garcia, adding a touch of personalized magic to their family's celebration.
Legendary artist Juan Luis Guerra received a profound honor in his native Dominican Republic, being named "Patrimonio Musical y Poético de República Dominicana" (Musical and Poetic Heritage of the Dominican Republic) by the Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores (MIREX). Minister Roberto Álvarez lauded Guerra's career, noting its transcendence beyond awards and distinctions. Álvarez particularly highlighted Guerra's unique ability to narrate the everyday experiences, dreams of social justice, deep faith, joy, and unwavering humor of the Dominican people through his poetic verses. The ceremony, coinciding with the National Day of Merengue and National Day of Bachata, saw Guerra express deep gratitude, concluding with a statement giving "glory and honor to the Lord Jesus," attributing his melodies, metaphors, and songs to divine inspiration.
Further demonstrating a commitment to fostering future talent, The Latin Recording Academy, in collaboration with the Latin GRAMMY Cultural Foundation, announced the inaugural recipient of the Latin Music Educator Award. This new award recognizes an exceptional educator globally who significantly impacts students by integrating Latin music into their curriculum. Luciana Ortega of the Instituto Santa María de San Carlos in Chile was named the first honoree for her dedicated work, having taught music for over a decade. As part of this recognition, her school's music program will receive a substantial $10,000 instrument donation. Ortega will be formally honored during the 26th Annual Latin GRAMMY Week in Las Vegas. Manuel Abud, CEO of The Latin Recording Academy, underscored the importance of Ortega's daily commitment to music students in realizing the mission to honor, celebrate, nurture, and elevate Latin music and ensure its enduring legacy.
