Kaizer Chiefs' Ambitious Revamp: New Coach's Vision & High-Stakes Player Transfers

Kaizer Chiefs are undergoing a significant transformation ahead of the 2026/27 Betway Premiership season, marked by a new head coach, strategic player acquisitions, and potential high-profile departures. The Betway Premiership giants are actively restructuring their squad under the guidance of Fernando Da Cruz, who has officially taken the helm as head coach.

Fernando Da Cruz, returning to Naturena after previously serving on Nasreddine Nabi’s technical team, has outlined ambitious goals for Kaizer Chiefs. The 54-year-old tactician expressed gratitude for the trust placed in him by Chairman Dr Kaizer Motaung and Sporting Director Kaizer Motaung Jr, affirming his total commitment to the club. Da Cruz praised the club's facilities at Naturena, highlighting them as an ideal platform for success. He also conveyed satisfaction with the pre-season camp in Spain, noting the excellent conditions and challenging friendly matches as crucial preparation for the upcoming campaign. Da Cruz, who holds a UEFA Pro Licence and is known for his tactical discipline and preference for a 4-2-3-1 formation, urged supporters to back the team as they aim to challenge for titles, starting with their league opener against newly-promoted Kruger United on Saturday, 1 August, at Mbombela Stadium.

In terms of new arrivals, Kaizer Chiefs have secured the services of 26-year-old defender Thabo Moloisane, making him the club's first signing of the transfer window. Moloisane joined the Glamour Boys as a free agent from Stellenbosch FC, stepping in after Aden McCarthy's move to an Azerbaijan side. The ex-Stellies captain revealed that a move to Kaizer Chiefs had been a long-standing aspiration, materializing after three years. Having spent time at Naturena as a youth, Moloisane expressed immense joy and a sense of dream fulfillment in representing the club he considers the 'biggest Club in South Africa', acknowledging the significant responsibility that comes with it.

While strengthening the squad, Kaizer Chiefs are also facing potential high-profile exits. Glody Lilepo, the 28-year-old Congolese international, is reportedly a prime target for Moroccan giants AS FAR. Sources indicate that AS FAR is prepared to table a substantial offer exceeding $1 million (around R16-16.5 million) for Lilepo, who arrived at Chiefs from Valenciennes in January 2025. Lilepo had an impressive season for Chiefs, contributing significantly with an overall tally of seven goals and three assists across all competitions, or five goals and four assists in 27 league outings in a wide attacking role. While other clubs in Libya and Egypt have shown interest, AS FAR appears to be the most likely destination. His potential departure, following that of five other players and Aden McCarthy, would be a considerable blow for Da Cruz's side.

In a continued effort to bolster their attacking options, Kaizer Chiefs have intensified their pursuit of Stellenbosch FC winger Langelihle Phili. The club has submitted a revised player-plus-cash offer, which now reportedly includes a second player in addition to Ashley du Preez, to entice Stellenbosch to release the 20-year-old attacker. Ashley du Preez is understood to have already agreed personal terms with Stellenbosch, with his move contingent on Phili completing the switch to Amakhosi. Negotiations are said to be in a decisive phase, with both clubs working towards common ground on the deal's structure.

Langelihle Phili is considered a hot property in South African football. Born in Tshelimnyama on 21 January 2005, he developed through the AmaZulu FC academy before joining Stellenbosch FC. Phili announced his talent by winning both Player of the Tournament and Striker of the Tournament awards at the Engen Champ of Champs in 2023. He further contributed to Stellenbosch’s reserve side winning the DStv Diski Challenge and the Premier League Next Generation Cup before making his senior debut under Steve Barker in September 2024. His impressive 2025/26 campaign saw him score seven goals and provide one assist, making him a coveted target for Chiefs.

With Fernando Da Cruz at the helm, a new central defender onboard, a star winger potentially leaving, and a promising young talent being actively pursued, Kaizer Chiefs are signaling a determined effort to reshape their roster and return to contention in the upcoming season. The focus remains on strategic moves to build a competitive squad capable of challenging for silverware, embodying the high standards expected of the club by its vast fan base.
