K-Pop Conquers Hollywood: 'Kpop Demon Hunters' Set for 2026 Oscar Run

The highly successful animated Netflix film, "KPop Demon Hunters," is poised to make a significant impact during the upcoming awards season, securing its place among 35 features officially deemed eligible for the coveted animated feature category at the 98th Academy Awards in 2026. This mega-hit movie, which has already broken streaming records, garnered its potential Oscar bid through a strategic limited theatrical release earlier this year.
To meet the Academy's stringent qualification requirements, "KPop Demon Hunters" enjoyed a limited theatrical run in key markets including New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco in June. Demonstrating its broad appeal, the film later expanded its reach in August, grossing an impressive $18 million from sing-along screenings across 1,750 theaters nationwide, further solidifying its eligibility and commercial success.
The film's performance on Netflix has been nothing short of phenomenal. According to the streaming giant, "KPop Demon Hunters" stands as its most-watched film of all time, accumulating over 541 million hours viewed globally to date. Beyond its viewing figures, the movie's soundtrack has also achieved remarkable success, becoming the highest-charting soundtrack of the year with eight of its songs appearing on the prestigious Billboard Hot 100 tally.
While "KPop Demon Hunters" is a strong contender, it faces competition from a diverse array of other animated features that have also qualified for the 2026 Oscars. These include "Arco," "Elio," "Zootopia 2," "Little Amélie or the Character of Rain," "In Your Dreams," "Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle," and "Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc."
The film's potential for Academy recognition extends beyond the animated feature category. There is a strong possibility that "KPop Demon Hunters" could also secure a spot on the shortlist for Best Original Song. The track "Golden," performed by the film's fictional K-pop girl group HUNTR/X, has been highlighted by Billboard's Paul Grein as a strong contender. "Golden" notably topped both the Billboard Global 200 and Billboard Global Excl. U.S. charts for an impressive 17 consecutive weeks, showcasing its immense global popularity.
Fans and industry observers eagerly await the official announcements. Nominees for Best Original Song are scheduled to be revealed on December 16, while the nominations for the animated feature category will be unveiled on January 22. The 98th Academy Awards ceremony is set to air live on ABC on March 15 at 7 p.m. ET, where the fate of "KPop Demon Hunters" and its fellow nominees will be decided.
