Jay-Z launched his highly anticipated two-night concert series at London’s Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Friday, September 4th, initiating the first evening with a heartfelt tribute to his wife, Beyoncé, on the occasion of her 45th birthday. The sold-out audience joined in a serenade of “Happy Birthday” as spectacular fireworks illuminated the stadium. Beyoncé, observing from a VIP suite alongside friends, was featured on the venue’s giant screens, blowing kisses and waving to the fans below.
This significant event marked Jay-Z’s first UK headline performance in nearly 13 years, with his last solo London appearance being part of the Magna Carta World Tour at The O2 Arena in 2013. Furthermore, it was his inaugural return to play in the city since the 2018 On the Run II Tour, which he co-headlined with Beyoncé. This particular tour leg is a grand celebration of the 30th anniversary of his seminal 1996 debut album, Reasonable Doubt. It closely followed a successful trio of star-studded shows at New York’s Yankee Stadium the previous month, which also commemorated 25 years since the release of his iconic album, The Blueprint.
The concert at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium commenced with a distinctive spoken introduction delivered by Sir Idris Elba, reminiscent of the opening of Jay-Z’s 2007 album, American Gangster. Jay-Z then captivated the audience with a comprehensive setlist spanning his extensive musical catalog, from early compositions to numerous career-defining hits. The evening was amplified by several high-profile guest appearances, imbuing the show with the same vibrant energy seen during the Yankee Stadium run. These additional dates were incorporated into the tour’s initial schedule in response to overwhelming public demand.
