Ijaw Congress Declares Allegiance: Wike Gains Key Support from Influential Ethnic Group

The political landscape in Rivers State, Nigeria, has witnessed a significant realignment as the Rivers Ijaw People’s Congress (RIPC) publicly announced its withdrawal of support for Governor Siminilayi Fubara. This decision, declared yesterday by the congress's Chairman, Senator George Sekibo, came during a "thank you" visit by the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, to the Okrika local government area of the state. The RIPC has now pledged its unwavering allegiance to Minister Wike, highlighting a notable shift in political loyalties within the region.
Senator Sekibo addressed the growing feud between Governor Fubara and Minister Wike, describing it as "very unfortunate." He underscored the Ijaw people's inherent gratitude, contrasting it with the perceived actions of Governor Fubara. Sekibo recalled Minister Wike's crucial role in facilitating the emergence of Fubara, an Ijaw son, as the governor of Rivers State, a move that garnered widespread support across the state. In a powerful declaration of loyalty, Sekibo stated, "Please don’t look at him and think we are all ungrateful people. Ijaw people are very grateful people. That is why we abandoned him (Fubara) and said we will follow you. You have done so much for Ijaw people in Rivers. Whatever you say we should do, is what we will do." He further reassured Minister Wike of the Ijaw people’s steadfast support and committed their complete loyalty to President Bola Tinubu.
Local leaders echoed these sentiments during Wike's visit. Mr. Akuro Tobin, the chairman of Okrika local government area, openly acknowledged Minister Wike as his "political godfather," crediting him with supporting numerous sons and daughters from the area to attain various political offices, both elective and appointed. Tobin affirmed the solid backing of the men, women, and youths of the LGA for both Wike and President Tinubu. Speaking on behalf of Okrika women, Mrs. Linda Stewart, the Deputy Speaker of the Rivers State Assembly and representative for Okrika Constituency, lauded Wike's unprecedented support for women and offered prayers for his continued success.
In his address, Minister Wike expressed his gratitude to the people for their support and for standing firm with President Tinubu. He characterized President Tinubu as a man who honors his promises and encouraged the people of Okrika to continue supporting individuals of good and trustworthy character. Minister Wike's visit also included a call on the 'Amanyanabo' of Okochiri Kingdom, King Akete Tom. He commended the traditional leader for maintaining unity among his people and revealed that a significant decision regarding the 2027 election had already been made, with details to be shared by his "children" in due course. He appealed to the monarch not to interfere with upcoming political activities but rather to offer guidance when needed, stating, "It is not going to be business as usual. Allow us to play our game, and if there is any problem, call us to settle."
