Iconic Reunion: Nicolas Cage and John Woo Team Up 28 Years After 'Face/Off' for New Thriller

Nearly three decades after their groundbreaking collaboration on the action classic Face/Off, acclaimed director John Woo and star Nicolas Cage are set to reunite for an ambitious new project titled Gambino. This crime biopic will delve into the life of the notorious New York mob boss, Carlo Gambino, with Cage cast in the titular role as the quiet yet ruthless mafia patriarch. The screenplay for Gambino is penned by George Gallo, known for Bad Boys, and Nick Vallelonga, an Academy Award winner for Green Book, promising a compelling narrative.
The film's official synopsis reveals a fascinating premise: it will chronicle Carlo Gambino's journey from a butcher's son in Sicily to a figure who ruled New York's underworld with a quiet but firm authority. Following his death, which sent reverberations through the city, Pulitzer-winning journalist Jimmy Breslin embarks on a quest to unveil the true man behind the legend. Through the diverse recollections of those who both feared and loved him, Breslin's investigation is poised to illustrate Gambino's extraordinary ascent from an outsider to one of the most formidable personalities in American organized crime history.
While Gambino has been in development for several years, the project recently underwent a significant retooling, bringing Woo and Cage onboard along with a new producing team. This team includes Cassian Elwes, renowned for his work on films like Mudbound and The Butler, Edward Zeng of NextG Films, and Robert Daly Jr. and David Lipper from Latigo Films. NextG Films is providing the financing for the movie, with Cage, Gallo, and Vallelonga also taking on producing roles. Edward Zeng, who in the previous year launched a $100 million film investment fund with Elwes, articulated NextG Film's overarching vision: to meld Hollywood's finest creative talents with Silicon Valley's bold entrepreneurial spirit, aiming to deliver epic cinematic experiences that not only entertain but also encourage audiences to reflect on contemporary society.
In a noteworthy cinematic coincidence, John Travolta, Cage's co-star from Face/Off, previously portrayed another infamous mob boss, John Gotti, in the 2018 film Gotti, further highlighting the enduring connection between these actors and the crime genre. The original Face/Off, a science fiction action crime film released on June 27, 1997, and directed by John Woo, redefined action cinema with its innovative plot and intense performances by John Travolta as Sean Archer and Nicolas Cage as Castor Troy.
This reunion of Woo and Cage for Gambino has naturally rekindled fervent speculation regarding the long-discussed sequel to Face/Off. In 2023, Nicolas Cage confirmed that he had engaged in early discussions about the potential sequel with Adam Wingard, the director behind Godzilla vs. Kong. Cage alluded to a complex, 'three-dimensional chess' concept for the sequel, which would explore the narratives of the offspring of Castor Troy and Sean Archer. He expressed enthusiasm for Wingard's vision, stating, “I think Face/Off is a sequel that lends itself to a lot of twists and turns and unpredictability. It’s almost like if you factor in the idea of offspring and Castor and Sean having children and these children grow up, then it becomes like three-dimensional chess… it becomes even more complex.” Cage praised Wingard's talent, respect for cinema, and understanding of iconography, suggesting a strong creative alignment for the project. Fans eagerly await further updates on both Gambino and the prospective Face/Off 2.
