Iconic Return: William Shatner Brings Star Trek Back to Theaters!
As Star Trek celebrates its 60th anniversary, a new documentary titled "The Sixty-Year Mission: How Star Trek Changed Television And The World," executive produced by William Shatner, is set for an exclusive theatrical release at Regal Cinemas. The film will delve into the creation of "The Original Series" with interviews from its iconic cast and key figures across the franchise's history, offering a comprehensive look at its cultural impact.
Star Trek is making a notable return to theaters this fall, not through a new feature film, but with a compelling documentary celebrating its profound legacy. While the franchise hasn't graced the big screen with a new movie since 2016's "Star Trek Beyond," this year marks the 60th anniversary of Star Trek, an occasion that will be commemorated with new documentary content despite the impending conclusions of current Trek series like "Strange New Worlds" and "Starfleet Academy."
Headlining these anniversary celebrations is "The Sixty-Year Mission: How Star Trek Changed Television And The World," a new documentary executive produced by none other than William Shatner, the iconic original Captain James T. Kirk. This highly anticipated film is set for an exclusive theatrical run at Regal Cinemas, commencing on October 9.
The documentary promises an in-depth exploration into the creation and production of the groundbreaking "Star Trek: The Original Series." It will feature interviews with all three of the show's surviving principal cast members: William Shatner, George Takei (who portrayed Hikaru Sulu), and Walter Koenig (who played Pavel Chekov). Audiences will also have the unique opportunity to engage with Star Trek talent during Q&A sessions at select screenings.
Expanding beyond the original crew, "The Sixty-Year Mission" will also incorporate insights from a wide array of individuals crucial to the franchise's evolution. These include Gene Roddenberry, Jr., son of Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry, as well as various Star Trek writers, directors, producers, noted fans, and critics. The documentary further broadens its scope by featuring interviews with cast members from subsequent Trek series, showcasing the franchise's expansive universe.
Among those interviewed from other series are Jonathan Frakes, Brent Spiner, Gates McFadden, and Denise Crosby from "The Next Generation"; Nana Visitor from "Deep Space Nine"; Robert Picardo from "Voyager"; and Ethan Peck and Christina Chong from "Strange New Worlds." The film is written and directed by Mark A. Altman, with Michael S. Broder of Galaxie Pictures serving as producer. Additionally, Nacelle's own Star Trek documentary series, "The Center Seat," is also slated to return this fall on Prime Video, Tubi, and YouTube, further enriching the commemorative programming for the franchise's milestone anniversary.
