Horror Icons Unite! Sam Raimi & Stephen King Partner for First-Ever Film Adaptation

Two titans of the horror genre, author Stephen King and visionary director Sam Raimi, are finally set to collaborate on a new film project: an adaptation of King's 1996 best-selling horror novel, "Desperation." This long-anticipated partnership marks a significant moment, especially given King's historical influence on Raimi's early career.

King played a pivotal role in the trajectory of Raimi's first feature film, "The Evil Dead." After its initial shoestring-budget production, Raimi arranged for a non-competition screening at the Cannes Film Festival. Stephen King, who was in attendance, was deeply impressed by the film, publicly endorsing it in USA Today as one of his favorite horror movies. This endorsement proved crucial, generating significant interest and ultimately leading to New Line Cinema acquiring "The Evil Dead" for distribution.

Furthermore, King's support extended to Raimi's sequel, "Evil Dead 2." Despite the success of the first film, Raimi faced difficulties securing funding for the follow-up. It was King who convinced mega-producer Dino De Laurentiis to finance the project, thereby ensuring "Evil Dead 2" came to fruition and solidified Raimi's reputation in horror cinema.

Now, decades later, the duo is uniting for the adaptation of "Desperation." The Hollywood Reporter indicates that Zach Lipovsky and Adam Stein, known for their work on the "Final Destination" franchise's revival with "Bloodlines," are in talks to direct the film. The script is being penned by newcomer Ryan Brennan. Lipovsky and Stein will also serve as producers alongside Raimi and his Ghost House Pictures partner, Robert Tapert, with Romel Adam and Jose Cañas as executive producers.

Stephen King's "Desperation," first published in 1996, is a chilling narrative set in the desolate Nevada town of the same name. The plot centers around a small group of residents and travelers who must escape the clutches of the local sheriff, Collie Entragian, who has become possessed by a murderous supernatural entity named Tak. Notably, "Desperation" was published simultaneously with another King novel, "The Regulators," which featured the same characters in a parallel universe, offering a unique narrative cross-section.

This novel has seen a previous adaptation as an ABC TV movie in 2006. Directed by frequent King collaborator Mick Garris and written by King himself, that adaptation starred Ron Perlman as the terrifying Collie Entragian, alongside a cast including Tom Skerritt, Steven Weber, and Annabeth Gish. The upcoming film promises a fresh take on King's dark tale of supernatural possession and survival.
