Historic Aviation Deal Unlocks Direct Flights Between Nigeria and Brazil, Air Peace Leads the Way
Nigeria and Brazil have formalized a significant Bilateral Air Service Agreement (BASA), establishing a direct air connectivity framework designed to unlock new opportunities for trade, tourism, investment, and extensive people-to-people exchanges between the two nations. The landmark agreement was signed by Nigeria's Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, and Brazil's Minister of Transport, Silvio Costa Filho, during a high-profile visit by a Nigerian delegation to Brazil.
This strategic pact is poised to foster stronger economic integration, enhance cultural ties, and deepen diplomatic cooperation between Nigeria and Brazil, representing the two largest economies on their respective continents. According to Tunde Moshood, Special Adviser, Media to the Nigerian Minister, the agreement underscores President Bola Tinubu's administration's commitment to expanding Nigeria's global partnerships and cultivating an enabling environment for commerce and mobility. Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva also lauded the partnership, expressing Brazil's keen interest in strengthening ties with Nigeria across various sectors, including aviation, agriculture, and infrastructure development.
A key highlight of President Tinubu's visit, which included senior cabinet members such as the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Olawale Edun, and the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, was the official signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) formalizing this crucial BASA.
In a direct outcome of this agreement, Air Peace, a Nigerian carrier, has secured approval to commence direct passenger flights between Lagos, Nigeria, and São Paulo, Brazil. Allen Onyema, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Air Peace, confirmed this development, describing the Lagos-São Paulo route as “long overdue” and a substantial boost for Nigeria's aviation sector. The airline plans to initiate the service with three weekly flights, with provisions to increase frequency based on demand and operational feasibility.
The commencement of these direct flights is slated for late November 2025, marking a historic milestone as the first direct connection between Nigeria and Brazil facilitated by a Nigerian airline. This development is expected to significantly ease travel and cargo movement, further solidifying the bilateral relationship and tapping into the vast potential for mutual growth and cooperation between the two African and South American giants.
