Heartbreak for D’Tigress: World Cup Dreams Crushed, National Apology Issued

Nigeria’s national women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, have officially been eliminated from contention for the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup, set to take place in Berlin, Germany. This early exit from the tournament for the African champions was confirmed following South Korea’s significant 95-69 defeat against France. The result of this particular Group B match extinguished D’Tigress’s hopes of advancing to the knockout stage.

France’s commanding victory over South Korea marked their second win in the group, having previously triumphed over Hungary. South Korea, crucially for Nigeria's fate, had already secured a vital win against D’Tigress. Consequently, regardless of the outcome of their final Group B fixture against France, D’Tigress can no longer finish above either South Korea or Hungary in the group standings. Even an improbable 100-point victory over France would not suffice to send Nigeria through, as the head-to-head rule dictates progression in the event of teams finishing level on points.

This early elimination represents a considerable setback and disappointment for the African champions, who had arrived in Germany with ambitions of further solidifying Nigeria’s burgeoning reputation on the global basketball stage. The competition format dictates that the four group winners directly proceed to the quarter-finals. Teams finishing in second and third place qualify for a single-elimination play-in round to vie for the remaining last-eight berths, while the fourth-placed teams are eliminated at the group stage.

Nigeria’s unfortunate exit means the team will not participate in the qualification round for the quarter-finals. Instead, their upcoming match against France will now be played with only pride at stake. This setback also thwarts D’Tigress’s aspirations of matching or surpassing their best-ever World Cup performance, which occurred in 2018 when they reached the quarter-finals in Tenerife, Spain. Despite entering the 2026 tournament with renewed ambition, fueled by their continued dominance in African women’s basketball, their campaign has prematurely concluded.

In the wake of their performance, D’Tigress have since issued an apology to Nigerians for the disappointing outcome. Under the guidance of Coach Rena Wakama, the team will now focus on concluding the tournament on a positive note, aiming to deliver a strong performance in their final fixture against France.
