Haaland Shatters Records as Man City Dominates Fulham in Goal-Fest Thriller!

Manchester City emerged victorious in a dramatic and 'madcap' 5-4 Premier League encounter against Fulham at Craven Cottage on Tuesday, a game where they nearly squandered a four-goal lead. The thrilling nine-goal feast, while securing three crucial points for City, simultaneously exposed significant defensive vulnerabilities that left manager Pep Guardiola at a loss for words and intensified the ongoing title race.
City appeared to be cruising, establishing a 3-0 lead before Emile Smith Rowe pulled one back for Fulham before halftime. Early in the second half, City extended their advantage to 5-1 with further goals, including Erling Haaland's historic strike, a second from Phil Foden, one from Tijjani Reijnders, and an own goal deflected in off Sander Berge from Jeremy Doku's effort. However, Fulham mounted a spirited comeback that transformed the match into a desperate fight for survival for the visitors.
Erling Haaland was a central figure, achieving a remarkable milestone by becoming, by some distance, the quickest player to score 100 Premier League goals. He reached this century in just 111 matches, comfortably breaking Alan Shearer's record of 124 games. Haaland, who had uncharacteristically come into the Fulham match on the back of three consecutive blanks, steered home Jeremy Doku's cross for his 20th goal in 19 appearances across all competitions this season. He expressed immense pride and happiness, calling the achievement a 'huge thing' and a moment he would remember for the rest of his life.
Despite the historic win, City's defensive performance drew strong criticism. Fulham's comeback was sparked by Alex Iwobi, who scored their second goal, followed by a quickfire brace from substitute Samuel Chukwueze, who netted two goals in the space of six minutes. This brought the score to 5-4 with 12 minutes of regular time plus eight minutes of stoppage time remaining, forcing City to cling on desperately. Guardiola admitted he had 'no answer' for what happened defensively, calling the situation a 'question of survival.' Pundit Clinton Morrison echoed concerns, calling City's defense 'a problem' and highlighting their 16 goals conceded this season compared to Arsenal's seven, suggesting such fragility could be detrimental in the title race.
The outcome significantly impacted the Premier League title battle. City's hard-fought victory narrowed the gap to leaders Arsenal to just two points, although Arsenal had the opportunity to re-establish a five-point advantage in their subsequent match. Guardiola acknowledged Arsenal's strength and solidity and also expressed growing impressiveness with Chelsea under Enzo Maresca, now considering them a 'credible threat' in the title chase if they secured a victory against Leeds United. Guardiola, drawing on his experience, emphasized the 'long, long run' required to fight for the Premier League title.
Fulham's spirited fightback, particularly in the second half, earned widespread acclaim. Manager Marco Silva praised his team's 'unbelievable' reaction and impressive resolve after being heavily behind. Alex Iwobi called for his side to take the 'positivity' from their fighting spirit despite the narrow defeat. Samuel Chukwueze, introduced at halftime, proved instrumental, scoring his first Fulham goals with two superb finishes. He reflected on the 'crazy game,' crediting the team's belief and the confidence instilled in him by manager Marco Silva and his teammates. Even Pep Guardiola, despite the tense outcome, was seen embracing and joking with Chukwueze after the match, acknowledging the Nigerian winger's significant impact on the game.
Both Alex Iwobi and Samuel Chukwueze were included in Nigeria's 54-man preliminary list for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, with the size of this initial squad drawing some criticism. For Fulham, the focus now shifts to their next Premier League fixture, an away trip to Crystal Palace, where they will aim to build on the resilience and character displayed against Manchester City.
