American Football Is Coming to 16 Nigerian Cities in 2027

American football is getting a new chance to find an audience in Nigeria.

The Continental American Football League (CAFL) Africa says it will launch a league across 16 Nigerian cities from March 2027, starting in Makurdi, Benue State. The planned locations include Lagos, Ibadan, Ilorin, Abuja, Lafia, Lokoja, Kano, Kaduna, Jos, Enugu, Owerri, Asaba, Warri, Port Harcourt and Uyo.

The announcement was made in Makurdi by CAFL founder and commissioner Muhammad El Muhammad, who said preparations for the league are already underway.

For a sport that is still largely unfamiliar to many Nigerians, the ambition is straightforward: take American football beyond the small pockets where it is already played and give more young people a chance to try it.

Why Makurdi comes first

Makurdi has been chosen as the starting point because CAFL sees sporting talent in Benue that has not been fully developed.

The league plans to establish an American football academy in Makurdi where young players can be identified and trained.

El Muhammad said the organisers had reached an understanding with the Benue State Government to support the launch by providing an environment suitable for the programme, including playing grounds and security. The league itself says its wider aim is to create opportunities for African athletes through American football.

That could give the project a local base rather than making the Nigerian league something that exists mainly in the country's biggest commercial centres.

More than matches

CAFL says the league is being built around youth development, jobs and talent scouting, rather than matches alone.

The organisers also plan to provide sports clinics and trained therapists to deal with injuries during games.

That part will matter because American football is a contact sport, and building confidence around player welfare will be important if the organisers want parents and young athletes to take the programme seriously.

The league will also need cooperation from state governments and local sports authorities across the 16 locations. Pitches, security and the basic infrastructure required to host games cannot be taken for granted.

Can American football find its place in Nigeria?

Nigeria already has an organised American football community.

The Nigeria American Football Association (NAFA) says its work includes developing both contact and non-contact versions of the sport and growing American football competitions in the country.

That gives CAFL something to build on, although creating a league that operates across 16 cities is a much larger undertaking.

There is also a growing connection between Nigeria and the sport abroad. Nigerian-born and Nigerian-American players have reached the NFL, while flag football is heading towards its Olympic debut at the Los Angeles 2028 Games.

For CAFL, the challenge now is turning the announcement into something young Nigerians can actually see, play and follow.

If the March 2027 launch happens as planned, Makurdi will be the first stop. From there, the organisers want American football to travel far beyond Benue.
