Governor Otti Denies Presidential Aspirations

Abia State governor, Alex Otti, has publicly disassociated himself from any future presidential, vice presidential, or senatorial ambitions following the conclusion of his tenure as governor. Speaking in Umuahia, the state capital, Governor Otti addressed a viral report criticizing him for visiting the jailed leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, in Sokoto.
Governor Otti emphasized that criticism is an inherent part of democracy, and while everyone is entitled to their opinion, holding a different viewpoint does not automatically make it correct. He reiterated his long-standing position regarding his post-governorship plans, stating, "by the time I’m done with governorship, I will retire." He clarified that he undertook his current role with a specific mission, and upon its fulfillment, he intends to step aside to allow younger individuals to take over. He also expressed a lack of understanding regarding the concept of an "Igbo presidency" mentioned by his accuser, asserting that any premise based on his continued political aspirations after his governorship would collapse.
Regarding his visit to Nnamdi Kanu, Governor Otti defended his action, explaining that it was the appropriate thing to do given that Kanu hails from Abia State, specifically Umuahia North local government. He chose not to delve into further public details about the visit to avoid jeopardizing ongoing discussions. Governor Otti revealed that he had previously initiated high-level discussions concerning Kanu, maintaining a belief in finding solutions rather than remaining silent on such issues.
He further recalled having extensively written about Nnamdi Kanu and Operation Python Dance in 2017 or 2018, condemning the latter at the time and reaffirming his condemnation. He also cast doubt on the authenticity of some recordings featured in the video used by his critics. Concluding his remarks, Governor Otti underscored the crucial importance for political officeholders to recognize when it is time to exit their positions, particularly after fulfilling the mandates they were elected to accomplish, thereby making way for others.
