Google's AI Takes Over Search: Get Ready for More AI Overviews!

The integration of artificial intelligence into search engines and the broader generative AI landscape has seen significant expansion and evolution over the past year, according to market intelligence firm Similarweb's 2026 Generative AI Landscape report. Google's AI-generated summaries, known as AI Overviews, now appear in 43% of US searches, a substantial increase from 15% a year prior. Complementing this, Google's AI Mode provides a conversational interface for more complex queries, allowing users to move seamlessly from an AI Overview while maintaining search context. Google attributes AI Mode's effectiveness to a technique called query fan-out, which breaks down questions into subtopics, executes multiple searches, and synthesizes responses with supporting links.

The adoption of conversational search has surged, with Similarweb estimating a rise in visits to Google’s AI Mode web experience from 126 million in June 2025 to 279 million in May 2026. Google separately reported that AI Mode surpassed one billion monthly users, a figure that measures individual users rather than web visits and encompasses different parts of Google Search. This shift towards AI has also influenced user search behavior, with Similarweb recording a 5.4% increase in the average length of Google searches. Users are now adopting more natural-language queries, akin to prompts used with AI assistants, enabling them to provide greater detail in a single search and receive comprehensive responses without immediately needing to visit external websites.

The broader generative AI market has also experienced robust growth, with generative AI websites collectively receiving an average of 9.5 billion monthly visits between June 2025 and May 2026, marking a 70% increase year-on-year. Monthly unique visitors grew by 57% to 655 million, and mobile application downloads climbed 58% to 4.4 billion. These figures encompass standalone services like ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Perplexity, providing a larger context for Google's integration of AI within its already expansive search product.

Despite the proliferation of AI search tools, audience data suggests that users often engage with multiple services. Similarweb found that most ChatGPT users continue to use Google, and significant audience overlap among platforms like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude indicates that individuals are leveraging several search and AI services rather than committing exclusively to one. This multi-platform usage highlights a nuanced user adoption pattern in the evolving AI landscape.

The rise of AI-generated answers has raised concerns among publishers regarding potential reductions in referral traffic, as content is often incorporated into AI responses without necessarily generating direct website visits. Similarweb previously identified news publishers as a sector particularly impacted by these changes. In response, Google has implemented modifications to how external sources are displayed within AI Overviews and AI Mode. As of May, Google introduced direct links within responses, article suggestions, website previews, and more prominent references to original material, aiming to enhance transparency and make relevant websites easier to identify. However, Google has not released traffic data to quantify the impact of these updates on click-through rates to publishers.

Further analysis by Similarweb on ChatGPT's citation patterns reveals that the share of responses containing web citations increased more than fivefold, from approximately 1.3% in June 2025 to 6.8% in May 2026, based on US desktop activity. Citation rates showed sectoral variations, with travel, retail, and sports responses exhibiting higher rates due to frequently changing information. A key distinction emerged between cited pages and referral destinations: about 65% of URLs cited by ChatGPT were deep links (two or three folders below the main domain, such as articles or product pages), whereas 58.8% of AI referral traffic landed on homepages. This suggests that AI answers often draw information from detailed content, while users clicking links are frequently directed to a company's main website.

Following ChatGPT’s May 7 search update, which gave brand links greater prominence, Similarweb observed a 157.7% week-over-week increase in overall referral traffic and a remarkable 354.7% increase in homepage referrals. The proportion of ChatGPT referral visits landing on homepages jumped from 26-32% before the update to around 60% after May 7, indicating a significant shift in user navigation following AI interactions. These figures, however, specifically cover ChatGPT referral activity and do not reflect clicks from Google AI Overviews or AI Mode.

In parallel, Cloudflare is addressing publishers' concerns about AI access with new services. Their private-beta 'Pay per Crawl' service allows website operators to set a fee for authenticated AI crawlers to access content, enabling them to permit, charge, or block individual crawlers. This system records paid requests, charges the crawler operator, and distributes proceeds to the website owner. Additionally, Cloudflare's 'AI Crawl Control' service offers configurable HTTP 402 "Payment Required" responses, allowing publishers to provide licensing terms or contact details to crawlers. These initiatives offer website operators more control over how AI services interact with and utilize their material, providing new avenues for monetization and content protection as AI-generated answers become increasingly prevalent across various platforms.
