Google & Reliance Join Forces: Free AI Pro for Millions in India!

Google has announced a significant partnership with Reliance Industries, led by billionaire Mukesh Ambani, to broaden its AI presence in India, a critical emerging market. This collaboration will bundle Google's AI Pro subscription at no extra cost with Jio 5G plans for eligible users. The agreement, disclosed on a recent Thursday, offers an 18-month free subscription to Google's AI Pro for Jio users, a deal valued at ₹35,100 (approximately $396), compared to the standard monthly cost of ₹1,950 (around $22).
Initially targeting Jio users aged 18 to 25, the offer will subsequently expand to all Jio subscribers nationwide. The subscription includes access to the advanced Gemini 2.5 Pro model via the Gemini app, enhanced limits for generating AI images and videos using Nano Banana and Veo 3.1, expanded usage of Notebook LM for academic and research purposes, and a substantial 2 TB of cloud storage across Google Photos, Gmail, Drive, and WhatsApp backups. Reliance has also indicated that this partnership aims to explore and deliver more localized AI-powered experiences to its users.
This strategic move places Google in direct competition with rivals like Perplexity, which recently allied with Bharti Airtel, Reliance's primary competitor, to offer free Perplexity Pro access to Airtel's extensive subscriber base. Furthermore, OpenAI, another major AI player, recently announced plans to provide free access to its sub-$5 ChatGPT Go plan to Indian users starting November 4, having expanded this entry-level tier to 17 Asian countries since its August launch. These developments highlight India's significance as the world's most populous nation and second-largest internet market, making it an irresistible target for global tech firms looking to gather diverse data, refine AI models, and test use cases for broader emerging market scalability.
Beyond consumer offerings, the partnership extends to the enterprise sector, with Reliance collaborating with Google Cloud to expand access to Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) in India. Reliance's AI subsidiary, Reliance Intelligence, will serve as a strategic go-to-market partner for Google Cloud, aiming to broaden the reach of Gemini Enterprise across Indian organizations and develop proprietary pre-built AI agents for the platform. Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google and Alphabet, emphasized that this announcement would equip Indian consumers, businesses, and the vibrant developer community with Google's state-of-the-art AI tools.
Reliance has been actively strengthening its AI infrastructure, as announced at its 48th annual general meeting, through its newly established subsidiary, Reliance Intelligence. This includes partnerships with its investors, Google and Meta. A joint venture between Reliance and Meta, with a combined investment of ₹8.55 billion (approximately $100 million) and a 70/30 ownership split, further underscores this commitment. While India has yet to produce a major homegrown AI breakthrough, it has been a significant driver of U.S.-led AI platform adoption, ranking among the top consumer markets for tools like Google's Nano Banana, OpenAI's ChatGPT, and Anthropic's Claude. Extending free access to paid AI versions is expected to accelerate adoption and solidify India's position as a key growth market for generative AI. However, the long-term revenue generation for these AI companies beyond these free bundling offers remains a subject of anticipation. Mukesh Ambani articulated the vision behind these collaborations: to make India not just AI-enabled but AI-empowered, enabling every citizen and enterprise to leverage intelligent tools for creation, innovation, and growth.
