God of War Series Finds Its First Goddess: Teresa Palmer Joins Highly Anticipated Live-Action Adaptation

Teresa Palmer has been officially cast in the highly anticipated “God of War” series adaptation for Amazon Prime Video, sources have confirmed with Variety. Palmer is set to portray Sif, the revered wife of Thor and a prominent figure among the Aesir. Her casting follows the earlier announcement that Ryan Hurst will star as Kratos, the iconic protagonist of the series. Interestingly, Hurst previously lent his voice to the character of Thor in the critically acclaimed game “God of War: Ragnarök.”
The role of Sif introduces an intriguing dynamic to the television adaptation, as the goddess did not make an appearance in the 2018 “God of War” reboot, which initiated the Norse mythology chapter of the franchise. However, Sif plays a significant role in the sequel, “God of War: Ragnarök,” where she ultimately aligns with Kratos and Atreus upon discovering the true extent of Odin's manipulative nature and his willingness to sacrifice family for his own gain. Whether her earlier introduction in the series will lead to a modified storyline for the father and son's journey remains to be seen.
The series is poised to pick up the narrative thread from the two most recent “God of War” games, centering on Kratos as he endeavors to raise his ten-year-old son, Atreus. The official logline reveals that "Father and son Kratos and Atreus embark on a journey to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye. Through their adventures, Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human." The original 2018 game marked a pivotal shift for the franchise, transitioning from its Greek pantheon origins to a new, sprawling world rooted in Norse mythology, where Kratos found himself in a new environment with a new family.
The journey to bring “God of War” to the small screen has been extensive. Amazon greenlit the series adaptation back in 2022. The production saw a change in leadership in October 2024, with original showrunner Rafe Judkins exiting and Ronald D. Moore stepping in as the new showrunner shortly thereafter. Moore, known for his work under his Tall Ship Productions banner, will also serve as writer and executive producer for the series. Frederick E.O. Toye has been tapped to direct the initial two episodes.
The executive producer team is robust, featuring Ronald D. Moore, Maril Davis of Tall Ship Productions, Cory Barlog (a veteran of the “God of War” franchise), Naren Shankar, Matthew Graham, Asad Qizilbash, Jeff Ketcham, Hermen Hulst, Roy Lee, and Brad Van Arragon. The co-executive producers include Joe Menosky, Marc Bernardin, Tania Lotia, and Ben McGinnis. The series is a collaborative effort, co-produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios, in association with PlayStation Productions and Tall Ship Productions.
Teresa Palmer brings a wealth of experience to her role. She is widely recognized for her work in film, with notable appearances in features such as “The Fall Guy,” the Oscar-winning “Hacksaw Ridge,” “The Grudge 2,” “I Am Number Four,” and “Knight of Cups.” On the television front, Palmer has starred in series like “A Discovery of Witches,” “The Clearing,” and “Mix Tape.” Her upcoming projects include the Australian series “The Family Next Door.” Palmer is represented by CAA, Management 360, Shanahan Management in Australia, and Sloane Offer.
Showrunner Ronald D. Moore is working in close collaboration with "God of War" veteran Cory Barlog to ensure the series remains faithful to the intricate mythology and established structure of the game world, while also making thoughtful adaptations tailored for the television medium. The search for the actor to portray Atreus, Kratos's son, is still ongoing.
