Ukraine's Starlink Chaos: Zelenskyy Warns Musk as Military Access Vanishes

Ukraine's military experienced a significant disruption in its access to the military version of Starlink, a critical communication system, according to reports on Wednesday. SpaceX, the company behind Starlink, reportedly imposed speed limits overnight, restricting the system's functionality for anything moving faster than approximately 100 mph (or 160 kilometers per hour). This limitation severely hampered Ukraine's ability to utilize essential assets like drones and aircraft for reconnaissance, air-defense operations, and intercepting Russian drones.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reacted strongly to the disruption, stating unequivocally that "People will die, of course, if attacks will continue and if Starlink will not work." He also conveyed his hope that the disruption was a mistake or a technical problem, making a simple yet urgent request: "We are asking to switch it on." The gravity of the situation was underscored by the understanding that such restrictions, when a private company can suddenly weaken a nation's defenses amidst an invasion, translate directly into human lives lost.

In response to these developments, Senator Thom Tillis intervened, directly addressing Elon Musk on X. Tillis questioned whether the overnight disruptions were unintended and issued a stern warning: "Intentionally degrading Ukraine’s ability to defend itself might be construed as aiding and abetting a mass murder." He pressed Musk for confirmation that this was not SpaceX's intent, emphasizing that "Supporting Ukrainian sovereignty, or at the very least, allowing for it, should not be a gray area for the U.S. government or for American corporations."

Later on Wednesday, Ukraine's former defense minister indicated that some connectivity was being restored. Elon Musk, for his part, stated that decisions regarding restrictions on the military network are ultimately up to the president. This incident occurred just days after former President Trump reportedly made a diesel deal with Putin and called for Zelenskyy's replacement, a deal that Senator Tillis had previously highlighted as running directly counter to existing law, showcasing his consistent stance in support of Ukraine.
