Global Tensions Erupt: Trump Issues Fiery Ultimatum to Iran Over Strait of Hormuz, Tehran Blasts 'Delusional' Warning

Tensions between the United States and Iran have escalated dramatically following a series of threats from US President Donald Trump regarding the Strait of Hormuz and Iran's staunch refusal to yield. Iran has branded Trump an 'unstable, delusional figure,' with its culture minister, Sayed Reza Salihi-Amiri, stating that Iranian society disregards his statements due to his perceived lack of personal, behavioral, and verbal balance.
President Trump issued an expletive-laden warning, threatening to unleash severe consequences on Tehran if it continued to block the Strait of Hormuz. He set a deadline for Tuesday night, declaring it 'Power Plant Day, and Bridge Day,' where Iran would face the obliteration of its power plants and bridges, vowing that Iranians would be 'living in Hell.' Trump's Truth Social posts included phrases like 'Open the F***in’ Strait, you crazy b*****ds, or you’ll be living in Hell - JUST WATCH! Praise be to Allah. President DONALD J. TRUMP.'
Iran has defiantly vowed to keep the strategic Strait of Hormuz closed. Images from Tehran depicted a massive banner showing Iranian soldiers with a netted bag full of US military vehicles, emblazoned with the chilling words: 'The Strait of Hormuz will remain closed; the entire Persian Gulf is our hunting ground.' Mohammad-Bagher Ghalibaf, Iran’s parliament speaker, responded to Trump's threats by warning that such 'reckless moves' would drag the US into a 'living HELL' and cause the 'whole region to burn,' emphasizing that war crimes would yield no gains.
The conflict has been marked by significant attacks on civilian infrastructure. The destruction of the 136-meter-high, $400 million B1 suspension bridge between Tehran and Karaj, still under construction and hailed as an engineering marvel, served as a stark demonstration of the escalating aggression. The attack occurred during Iranian new year holidays, causing 13 deaths and 95 injuries among picnicking families nearby. Other strikes included a petrochemicals complex in Bahrain, Kuwaiti oil infrastructure and power/water desalination plants hit by Iranian drones, and an Iranian missile strike in Haifa, northern Israel, which reportedly trapped four civilians under rubble and injured nine others. In Lebanon, Israeli airstrikes in southern Beirut and Kfar Hatta killed at least four and seven people, respectively, including a four-year-old girl.
Concerns over international law and war crimes have been raised. Oona A Hathaway, a professor of international law at Yale University, stated that Trump had offered no explanation to justify targeting civilian objects as lawful military objectives, asserting that if carried out, these threatened attacks would constitute war crimes. She added that 'immiserating the civilian population for bargaining leverage is not lawful.' Trump, however, claimed Iranians 'want us to do it' when asked if he was concerned about civilian suffering, stating they are 'living in hell.'
During this period of heightened tension, US Special Forces conducted what has been described as the 'most daring' rescue operations in US history, successfully extracting two crew members of a downed F-15E fighter jet from south-west Iran. One airman, hunkered down in a mountain-top ravine armed with only a pistol, was rescued after a complex operation involving hundreds of Special Forces commandos and CIA drone support. Trump remarked that Iran 'got lucky' by downing the US F-15 jet and praised the rescue efforts, noting the unusual daylight operation and the significant resources deployed for a single soldier.
Regarding negotiations, Trump claimed that Iran's negotiators have 'immunity from death' and that the regime had already conceded on nuclear weapons. He also suggested a 'good chance' of an agreement. However, Tehran insists it has not entered into peace talks, fearing its officials could be targeted if they broke cover for negotiations. Oman, a traditional mediator, discussed options for ensuring the smooth flow of transit through the Strait of Hormuz with Iran, while the United Arab Emirates expressed readiness to join any American-led effort to secure navigation in the strait. The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) also voiced 'extreme concern' over attacks by Israel and Hezbollah near its positions, warning that such actions 'could potentially draw return fire' and urged both sides to work towards a ceasefire.
