Ghana's Military Helicopter Tragedy: Nation Gripped by Horrific Videos and Calls for Justice

A tragic helicopter crash on August 6, 2025, in Adansi Sikaman, Ashanti Region, claimed the lives of eight public servants, including senior government officials and members of the armed forces. The victims were reportedly en route to Obuasi to launch the Responsible Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme (rCOMSDEP), an initiative designed to encourage illegal miners, commonly known as 'galamsey' operators, to adopt sustainable and responsible mining practices.
Among the deceased were Defence Minister Dr Edward Omane Boamah; Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation Dr Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed; Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Alhaji Limuna Muniru Mohammed; former parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye; and NDC Vice Chairman Samuel Sarpong. Also identified were Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah. A state funeral for all eight victims is scheduled for Friday, August 15, 2025, at Black Star Square in Accra.
In the wake of the tragedy, calls have intensified for a more robust fight against illegal mining. Dr Nii Moi Thompson, Chairman of the National Development Planning Commission (NDPC), speaking on Citi FM, urged the government to redouble its efforts against galamsey as the most fitting tribute to the victims. He stressed that their sacrifice should not be in vain and that a relentless pursuit to eradicate the menace is paramount. The Ghana Real Estate Developers' Association (GREDA) also extended its condolences, recognizing the eight individuals as 'national heroes' and expressing sympathy to the Presidency, affected families, and all Ghanaians.
The incident also presented significant communication challenges, particularly concerning the circulation of graphic videos. Sam Nartey George, Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, revealed that he considered ordering a nationwide internet shutdown to prevent the further spread of disturbing crash footage. Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, Mr George described the period as a “mixed experience,” highlighting the swift cooperation of telecom companies — MTN, Telecel, and AirtelTigo, Ghana — in responding to the crisis. Faced with videos rapidly circulating, especially on WhatsApp, which is beyond direct government control, the Minister opted for a coordinated, behind-the-scenes effort. He immediately reached out to Meta to activate a point of contact for intervention on WhatsApp and personally contacted senior vice presidents at Meta. Locally, he coordinated with the National Communications Authority (NCA) and the CEOs of the telecom companies. This collaborative effort resulted in approximately 30 million text messages being sent out within two hours, urging restraint and caution in sharing content, with the telecom companies bearing the cost of these messages.
International solidarity was also demonstrated, with President Carlos Vila Nova of São Tomé and Príncipe arriving in Accra to extend his deepest condolences to President John Mahama and the people of Ghana. President Nova visited the Ceremonial Garden of the Presidency, where he laid flowers in honour of the victims and signed a book of condolences, signifying global support during Ghana's period of mourning. President Mahama has urged Ghanaians to transform their grief into renewed determination to build the nation, emphasizing resilience in the face of this profound loss.
