Genesis' Bold Vision: The Stunning Wingback Wagon May Soon Hit the Road!

Genesis is seriously considering the production of its stunning Wingback wagon concept, alongside the X Gran Coupe, as part of its low-volume Genesis Magma product line. Luc Donckerwolke, Genesis president and chief creative officer, expressed a strong desire to build the Wingback, despite perceptions that high-power wagons are not popular outside of Germany. He points to the success of competitors like the BMW M5 Touring and Audi RS6 Avant in the U.S. market as evidence to the contrary. While high-performance wagons and sedan-based coupes are niche products typically dominated by German luxury automakers, Donckerwolke believes that Genesis's future strength lies in its ability to rapidly develop and produce such coachbuilt vehicles to cater to these specific market segments.
Both the muscular Wingback and the elegant X Gran Coupe have been meticulously designed for ease and cost-effectiveness of production. They are built upon the robust Genesis G90 platform, sharing the same 125.2-inch wheelbase and 207.6-inch overall length as the standard wheelbase sedan. Crucially, all core G90 hardpoints—including suspension pickup points, cowl height and width, and the placement of seats and the fuel tank—remain identical. This strategic design allows for the production of both the wagon and coupe by simply attaching unique bodyside and roof structures to the existing G90 platform, complemented by a set of distinct exterior panels. Donckerwolke emphasizes that these cars are “very executable very fast with a minimum level of advance investment.”
Manfred Harrer, head of the Genesis and Performance Tech Unit within Hyundai Motor Group’s R&D department, has confirmed that engineers are actively refining the G90 platform. This work is not only to support an upcoming Magma version of the G90 sedan but also to facilitate the production of models like the Wingback and X Gran Coupe. Harrer stated, “We are preparing this platform for high performance,” and reinforced the company’s commitment to these designs. Similar to the Hyundai Ioniq 5-based platform utilized for the GV60 Magma, the regular G90 underpinnings will be enhanced with increased stiffness and unique suspension components. These modifications aim to significantly improve steering feel, response, and high-speed ride and handling. Additionally, like the GV60 Magma, considerable attention will be dedicated to ensuring that the G90 Magma—and by extension, the Wingback and X Gran Coupe—offer a blend of speed, superior handling, quietness, and luxury.
The powertrain strategy for these halo vehicles has evolved. Initially, the X Gran Coupe and its convertible sibling were conceived as pure electric vehicles, signifying Genesis's ambition to transition to an all-electric brand by 2030. However, the recent slowdown in demand for electric vehicles, particularly in the luxury segment, has prompted a reassessment. Future Genesis models are now expected to feature high-performance plug-in hybrid (PHEV) or extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) powertrains, both developed in-house. It is likely that the initial production models of both the Wingback and X Gran Coupe will be powered by a version of the 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged and electrically supercharged V-6 engine found in the top-spec G90. Harrer’s engineers face the challenge of substantially boosting its current output of 409 hp and 405 lb-ft to compete with rivals like the RS6 Avant’s 600 hp and 627 lb-ft, or the M5 Touring’s impressive 717 hp and 738 lb-ft. A Genesis source has even hinted at the potential development of a new V-8 engine for the top-end Magma models, which could ultimately power production versions of the Wingback and X Gran Coupe.
