Gen Z Declares Skinny Jeans Dead, Redefining Denim for Workwear

A recent study highlights a significant shift in denim fashion, with Generation Z leading the charge away from skinny jeans. Nearly half of Gen Z respondents expressed relief that wide-leg styles are now trending, indicating a preference for less restrictive denim. This younger generation often finds it challenging to locate skinny jeans that fit their body shape comfortably, disliking the tight and stiff feel associated with them.
Wide-leg jeans have emerged as the most popular style among women, largely due to Gen Z's influence, with 25% of them naming wide leg as their top choice. High-waisted and boyfriend styles are also favored by the youngest generation, with 26% expressing joy at no longer being compelled to wear skinny cuts. Conversely, millennials appear more resistant to change; among the 85% of jean wearers, 23% still consider skinny fits their preferred style.
The research, commissioned by Matalan for its 'Happily Denim After' autumn campaign, which celebrates finding the perfect jean fit, revealed that straight-leg jeans are the overall most popular style, chosen by 30% of all polled individuals. Straight-leg jeans are also the style most likely to be worn to work and contribute most to feelings of confidence. However, Gen Z is actively promoting more casual dress codes, being more than twice as likely as other age groups to wear boyfriend jeans in an office setting.
