Gambia Soars into 2025/26 Season: Maiden Flight Heralds New Era of Tourism Optimism

The 2025/26 tourism season in The Gambia has officially commenced with the enthusiastic reception of its maiden flight at Banjul International Airport. This inaugural flight, operated by the UK-based tour operator Gambia Experience, carried 189 passengers and was met with a vibrant cultural display that showcased the nation's rich heritage and the inherent warmth of its populace, effectively setting a welcoming tone for the season.
The arrival ceremony was distinguished by the presence of significant dignitaries, including the Minister of Tourism and Culture, Abdou Jobe, alongside senior officials from the Gambia Tourism Authority (GTA), and the British High Commissioner to The Gambia, Harriet King. Their collective attendance underscored the collaborative efforts driving the growth of the tourism sector and the unified dedication to establishing The Gambia as a leading destination in West Africa.
Minister Jobe, expressing his profound pleasure at welcoming the initial flight, emphasized that the prosperity of the tourism sector is a shared responsibility. He passionately encouraged all Gambian citizens and stakeholders to actively contribute to enhancing the country’s appeal, asserting that tourism transcends the exclusive purview of the Ministry or the GTA, evolving instead into a national undertaking. He highlighted The Gambia's inherent advantages, such as its secure environment, favorable climate, and renowned friendly people, advocating for consolidated efforts to bolster the nation's reputation as the “Smiling Coast of Africa.”
Further reinforcing this positive outlook, Batch Fye, the Chair of the GTA Board, articulated the country's readiness to provide visitors with an authentic experience, characterized by genuine hospitality and profound cultural richness. He drew a distinction, noting that while East Africa is celebrated for its wildlife, West Africa, particularly The Gambia, distinguishes itself through its people and their welcoming disposition. British High Commissioner Harriet King also shared her deep admiration for The Gambia’s allure, recalling her fondness for the country’s hospitality during her diplomatic service. She enumerated the diverse attractions that increasingly appeal to British travelers, encompassing its incredible wildlife, delectable cuisine, pristine beaches, and excellent weather, thereby reaffirming the strong and vital ties between the UK and The Gambia for sustained tourism growth.
Local tour operators, such as Discovery Tours, are also actively working to highlight the destination’s broader spectrum of offerings beyond merely sun and sand, encouraging visitors to delve into the country’s cultural and natural treasures. Tony, a first-time visitor from Manchester, conveyed his anticipation of personally experiencing The Gambia’s celebrated beaches, vibrant culture, and welcoming inhabitants.
The launch of this season reflects a broader, accelerating momentum within The Gambia’s tourism industry, which is strategically benefiting from investments in critical infrastructure, targeted marketing initiatives, and enhanced community engagement. The government, in close coordination with tourism stakeholders, is diligently working to ensure that the destination not only attracts an increased number of visitors but also consistently delivers memorable and sustainable experiences. As The Gambia solidifies its position as a leader in West African tourism, the 2025/26 season is poised to capitalize on its unique selling points—its authentic cultural heritage, safe and friendly environment, and captivating natural beauty. The combined efforts of both the public and private sectors, coupled with the country’s enduring charm as the “Smiling Coast of Africa,” lay a robust foundation for a dynamic and highly successful tourism season ahead.
