Galamsey War Intensifies: NAIMOS Unleashes Dawn Raids as Debate Rages on Brutal Tactics

The persistent menace of illegal mining, locally known as galamsey, in Ghana continues to spark national debate and intensify enforcement efforts, highlighting both the government's commitment to combating the issue and the significant challenges encountered. Recent events have brought to the forefront violent confrontations and political disagreements over the most effective strategies to address the widespread environmental degradation caused by these illicit activities.
In a notable enforcement action, the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) conducted a massive dawn operation on Saturday, November 8, 2025, in Osino, located in the Fanteakwa South District of the Eastern Region. This intelligence-led swoop resulted in the apprehension of 36 individuals, including 32 Nigerien nationals and four Ghanaians, all suspected of engaging in illegal mining activities. Equipment believed to be used for the illicit operations was also seized. NAIMOS officials confirmed that this operation forms part of intensified government efforts to clamp down on galamsey, which poses a severe threat to Ghana’s water bodies and overall environment. The secretariat reaffirmed its dedication to sustaining nationwide campaigns against illegal mining and urged local communities to cooperate with security agencies by providing credible information.
The intensification of anti-galamsey operations has not been without its perils, as illustrated by a violent clash that occurred on Saturday, November 1, at Bronikrom near Hwidiem. During this incident, more than 600 residents reportedly confronted NAIMOS officers who were deployed to enforce anti-illegal mining operations, leading to the vandalism of several vehicles, including one belonging to the local Chief Imam.
