From Dropout to Innovator: Nigerian Entrepreneur's AI Assistant Reshapes Local E-commerce
Amina Dennisa Asu-Beks' journey into the world of technology is a testament to the power of curiosity and an unconventional path. Without a formal technical background or a completed university degree, she has forged a successful career centered on digital skills and systems thinking. Her story, which began with early experiments with Facebook ads in 2014, has culminated in the creation of Prizeless, an AI-powered shopping assistant that now serves thousands of users.
Asu-Beks' initial encounters with technology started remarkably early, around the age of nine or ten, when she first gained access to a laptop. Computer lessons introduced her to the thrill of writing code, a simple act that ignited her creativity and showcased technology as a powerful tool for self-expression. Growing up, she leveraged early knowledge tools, including an app on her laptop that aided her with schoolwork, particularly in English, and later relied heavily on platforms like Wikipedia. In recent years, Notion has become indispensable for organizing her thoughts and life, underscoring her adaptability to evolving technological tools.
Her academic pursuits initially led her to educational administration and planning at the University of Calabar, a path that diverged from her true interests in economics, statistics, business, and how systems operate. Despite this, her time in university became a crucible for her burgeoning tech skills. Around 2014, she delved into learning Facebook ads, a then-unpopular niche, driven by her fascination with digital systems, marketing, and strategy, rather than coding itself. By the age of 16, while still in her first year of university, she secured a role as a digital marketer at a media house in Calabar, handling Facebook ads, email marketing, and even shopping. Her self-taught expertise allowed her to consult for various brands, further solidifying her practical experience.
By her third year, Asu-Beks found herself mentally disengaged from her academic studies, her passion and efforts increasingly invested in her external ventures. This led to her decision to drop out of university, a choice met with parental disapproval but one she made with confidence, knowing her accumulated skills, work experience, and financial independence would sustain her. Post-university, she moved to Lagos, continuing to build a career based entirely on her capabilities, working across corporate organizations, hospitality, and eventually a major business consulting firm in Nigeria, where her career truly began to flourish.
Today, Amina Dennisa Asu-Beks is the founder of Prizeless, an AI shopping assistant specifically designed for African consumers. Prizeless aims to empower users by allowing them to compare and monitor product prices across various e-commerce platforms, helping them maximize their budgets. Users can set budgets and search for products, receiving recommendations consolidated from different stores to facilitate informed decisions. The MVP was launched two years prior, followed by a refined beta version in 2025, and a significant update in January 2026, leading to strong traction with thousands of active users. Beyond mere price comparison, Prizeless is committed to addressing deeper systemic issues in online shopping, such as frustrating payment and refund processes prevalent in Nigeria, striving for a system where consumers can receive instant refunds if products fall short of expectations—a critical gap in the market.
Technology is fundamental to Asu-Beks' daily life, both personally and professionally. Notion provides the structure she needs, helping her track progress and maintain organization, which is crucial for a founder, especially one not deeply technical. Her fully remote team relies on various tools for operations monitoring, workflow management, and project tracking, ensuring visibility and seamless coordination. For her, technology transcends mere tools; it embodies discipline and systems thinking, enabling the creation of efficient processes for both work and life.
A significant aspect of her work involves understanding how large platforms generate revenue without relying solely on traditional advertising. Collaborating with her technical partner, she studied companies like Facebook and WhatsApp, which built immense value and user bases long before explicit monetization strategies became obvious. This analytical approach, focused on traffic, user behavior, and system interactions, has informed the development and revenue strategy of Prizeless. Asu-Beks intentionally shies away from fleeting tech trends, instead prioritizing long-term relevance. She believes that, much like the dot-com era, many current technological marvels, including some AI applications, will not endure. Her focus remains on technologies that will demonstrably matter in the next five to ten years, understanding AI as a significant, albeit selective, shift akin to previous industrial revolutions.
Her philosophy extends to a belief that technology's ultimate purpose is to eradicate problems completely, rather than merely offering temporary solutions. She critiques the prevalent issues in Nigeria's fintech and e-commerce sectors, such as recurring payment failures, poor user experiences, and overly complicated systems, even for basic onboarding processes. For Asu-Beks, technology should be inherently simple and accessible to the average person, not just technical users.
Looking ahead, Asu-Beks holds a strong conviction in Africa's potential to emerge as a global center for innovation within the next five to ten years. She sees the continent as a market rich with opportunities, where mature technologies from other regions can still be profoundly transformative. This immense growth potential, coupled with increasing global attention, positions Africa not just as a market, but as a burgeoning hub of innovation across technology, agriculture, science, and other critical sectors, offering a unique opportunity for current builders to shape its future.
