Ford Drops a Bomb: $29,495 Fathom EV Truck Ready to Revolutionize the Road

After much anticipation and speculation, Ford has officially unveiled its forthcoming small all-electric pickup truck, the Ford Fathom. The new EV truck's name and starting price have been confirmed, alongside additional technological features and capabilities, putting an end to rumors that it might be called "Ranchero."

The chosen name, Ford Fathom, marks the introduction of an entirely new nameplate. Ford stated that the name reflects the company's achievement in reaching a "new depth of innovation," allowing them to "fathom possibilities once thought beyond reach" during the truck's development. This choice aligns with Ford's historical use of alliterative names such as Fusion, Focus, and Flex. Despite some initial bewilderment expressed by MotorTrend staffers upon learning the name, Ford Fathom is now official and is poised to be a highly disruptive vehicle, potentially on par with the impact of the F-150 Lightning.

A significant aspect of the Fathom' is its highly competitive starting price of $29,495, which includes the vehicle price of $28,350 plus a $1,595 destination fee. This base price includes a standard-range lithium-ion phosphate (LFP) battery, though its specific size remains undisclosed. Ford has confirmed that a larger battery pack will be available at an extra cost, offering extended driving range. The entry-level Fathom will feature rear-wheel drive, powered by a Ford-designed and built permanent-magnet motor. An all-wheel-drive option will also be offered, incorporating an induction motor on the front axle.

The Fathom's sub-$30,000 price point underscores Ford's commitment to manufacturing efficiency. The truck is built on the Universal Electric Vehicle Platform, which will also underpin other future EVs. This architecture incorporates large aluminum unicastings, consolidating over 100 parts that would typically be separate, thereby reducing the number of fasteners required. Furthermore, the Fathom's interior components mount directly to the top of the structural battery, eliminating the need for a distinct floor component.

This aggressive pricing strategy makes the Fathom roughly $20,000 less expensive than the cheapest versions of the F-150 Lightning in its final year of production. It also comes in slightly cheaper than the 2026 Ford Maverick XL trim, which starts at $29,685. While a potential rival, the Slate Truck, offers a lower starting price of $26,400, the Fathom's features may offer a stronger overall value proposition.
