Flight Scare: Xejet Passengers Safely Evacuated After Enugu Airport Incident

A Xejet domestic flight from Lagos faced a critical nose-wheel fault upon landing at Enugu Airport, triggering an immediate emergency response. The aircraft, registered 5N-BZN, touched down on Runway 08 around 19:10 local time on Thursday evening. Rapid action ensured all passengers and crew were safely evacuated within minutes.
The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) activated standard emergency procedures, deploying fire tenders, medical teams, and airport rescue personnel. Their coordinated effort secured the aircraft and airside environment, and by 19:48—just 38 minutes later—everyone had been transported safely to the terminal via apron buses, demonstrating the airport’s high level of preparedness.
FAAN’s Rescue and Firefighting team played a pivotal role in controlling the scene, underscoring the authority’s commitment to aviation safety. Mr. Henry Agbebire, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, confirmed the successful evacuation, stressing that the safety of passengers, crew, and airport users remains paramount.
Looking forward, FAAN will cooperate fully with Xejet and regulatory bodies, including the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and the Nigeria Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB), to conduct a thorough technical review. The authority has refrained from speculating on causes, aligning with international best practices in incident management and emphasizing accuracy over conjecture.
The incident also underscores the importance of rigorous aircraft maintenance and operational oversight. Nose-landing gear failures can result from mechanical faults, hydraulic issues, or structural wear. The NSIB’s investigation will be critical in identifying the root cause and ensuring adherence to robust safety protocols across the industry.
For African travel professionals, this event reinforces the necessity of maintaining client confidence and readiness to address concerns. While the evacuation outcome was positive, such incidents highlight the balance between operational growth and the need for continuous investment in training, infrastructure, and fleet maintenance.
Finally, the successful response at Enugu Airport serves as a testament to Nigeria’s aviation safety capabilities. Regulators, airlines, and industry stakeholders are reminded that while passenger growth is essential, uncompromising adherence to emergency preparedness and safety standards remains the foundation of a reliable aviation sector.
