Land Rover is poised to introduce a new, groundbreaking model to its luxury lineup with the 2028 Range Rover GT, marking the fifth distinct model under the esteemed Range Rover brand. This highly anticipated vehicle, still undergoing testing and shrouded in camouflage, represents a significant step towards electrification for Land Rover, with plans for its launch in 2027.
The Range Rover GT is notable as the first Land Rover vehicle to be built on the innovative Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) Electrified Modular Architecture (EMA) platform. This advanced platform offers the flexibility to support both battery electric vehicle (BEV) and hybrid powertrains.
Initially, the 2028 Range Rover GT will launch exclusively as an all-electric model from the Halewood, U.K., plant, with a hybrid variant planned for introduction later in its lifecycle, though specific timelines for the hybrid option have not yet been disclosed by JLR.
Upon its first glimpse, the 2028 Range Rover GT immediately distinguishes itself from traditional Land Rover SUVs. Its body shape shows a clear influence from designers behind the Jaguar GT Prototype, presenting itself more as a tall wagon or a modern grand tourer rather than a conventional SUV.
This impression is reinforced by its elegant, coupe-like slope past the C-pillar and a relatively low roofline compared to its overall body length, which is nearly identical to that of the Range Rover Sport.
The interior of the GT further underscores its departure from conventional Range Rover design philosophies. The cabin is meticulously crafted to be a welcoming and clutter-free environment, specifically engineered to promote calmness and relaxation for occupants during extended journeys.
A key focus in its development was the reduction of interior acoustic noise, which not only enhances the luxurious experience but also ensures that the vehicle's onboard systems can accurately understand clear, conversational instructions from its occupants. This deliberate design ethos, according to Land Rover, is what truly defines the GT as a modernized grand tourer.
Despite these innovations, the GT’s cabin retains the signature horizontal design elements that have long characterized Range Rover vehicles. Singular woven textiles gracefully wrap each layer of the dashboard, subtly concealing the speakers designated for the front passenger area.
Similarly, the air vent, designed to channel HVAC airflow across the entire width of the cabin, is discreetly hidden from view. The digital instrument cluster is presented on a single, streamlined screen, strategically positioned closer to the lower edge of the windshield to minimize driver distraction by simplifying the displayed information and keeping the driver's eyes forward.
JLR has indicated that more detailed information regarding the 2028 Range Rover GT will be released later this year, building anticipation for this significant addition to the luxury EV market.
