FIFA Confirms Maracanã for Historic 2027 Women’s World Cup Opener and Final

FIFA has unveiled the complete schedule for the 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil, confirming that Rio de Janeiro’s iconic Estádio do Maracanã will host both the opening match and the final.

The tournament will feature 64 matches across eight host cities, with each city guaranteed at least seven games, including a minimum of one knockout-stage fixture. Brazil will begin its campaign at the Maracanã on June 24 before travelling to São Paulo and Brasília for its remaining group-stage matches.

The knockout stages will be distributed across several cities, with Brasília, Porto Alegre, Recife and Salvador hosting matches through the Round of 16. Belo Horizonte and Fortaleza will join Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo as quarter-final venues, while São Paulo will host one semi-final and the bronze-medal match. The second semi-final and the 2027 Women’s World Cup final will return to the Maracanã, giving the historic stadium a central role in the tournament.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino described the tournament as an opportunity to showcase the continued growth of women’s football while placing Brazil’s renowned football culture at the centre of the global spectacle.

The tournament will mark the first Women’s World Cup hosted in South America, adding further significance to Brazil’s selection as host. With the Maracanã set to stage both the opening and closing matches, FIFA is positioning the tournament to deliver a landmark celebration of the women’s game.
