Manoj Bajpayee is set to portray Mahatma Gandhi in Sudhir Mishra's latest film, focusing on an untold 21-day period during India's independence. The movie, produced by Anubhav Sinha and NH Studioz, explores Gandhi's choice to step away and reinvent himself amid the nation's pivotal moment.
Acclaimed Indian thespian Manoj Bajpayee is set to portray Mahatma Gandhi for the first time on screen in a new film directed by Sudhir Mishra. This cinematic endeavor promises to shed light on a previously undisclosed chapter of India’s independence history, as detailed in recent announcements.
The film, a collaboration between Anubhav Sinha’s Benaras Mediaworks and Narendra Hirawat’s NH Studioz, delves into a pivotal 21-day period in Mahatma Gandhi’s life during India’s struggle for freedom. During this time, as the nation gravitated towards independence and Delhi became the focal point of power, Gandhi made the unconventional choice to walk away, a decision that, according to director Sudhir Mishra, led to his reinvention rather than retreat. Mishra explained to Variety that while historical records may note the superficial events, the film aims to uncover the deeper reasons behind this significant choice, portraying the personal evolution of a leader redefining his path.
Sudhir Mishra, who is nearing four decades in Hindi cinema, makes his return to theatrical releases following his 2023 film “Afwaah.” A recipient of three Indian National Film Awards for his works including “Yeh Woh Manzil To Nahin,” “Dharavi,” and “Main Zinda Hoon,” Mishra also boasts a filmography that includes notable titles like “Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi” and “Is Raat Ki Subah Nahin.”
Manoj Bajpayee, a multiple Indian National Film Award winner himself, takes on the iconic role of Gandhi, marking a significant milestone in his illustrious career. Saurabh Shukla has also joined the ensemble cast. Anubhav Sinha, celebrated for directing impactful films such as “Mulk,” “Article 15,” and “Thappad,” is producing the feature, with Narendra Hirawat and NH Studioz serving as producer and presenter, respectively.
This upcoming film joins a growing trend of projects centered on the life of Mahatma Gandhi, including Hansal Mehta’s ongoing Gandhi series, which stars Pratik Gandhi and features music by A.R. Rahman for Applause Entertainment.
