Egypt’s Startup Scene Expands Beyond Cairo with Aswan Innovation Push

Egypt is accelerating efforts to decentralize its tech ecosystem, shifting startup growth beyond Cairo into Upper Egypt under a broader innovation strategy.

The initiative aims to spread startup activity across multiple regions, reducing the long-standing concentration of venture funding and talent in the capital.

A key driver of this shift is a program by the Information Technology Industry Development Agency (ITIDA) in partnership with Plug and Play, supporting early-stage founders in Upper Egypt.

The Aswan Bootcamp Series has backed 61 startups, helping them secure around $3.7 million in funding through mentorship, training, and investor access.

Originally supported by USAID, the program continued under ITIDA after external funding ended, ensuring continuity for participating startups.

The success signals growing investor confidence in secondary cities, proving that strong execution can attract capital outside traditional hubs like Cairo.

Government support has been central, with ITIDA playing a key role in sustaining startup development programs and reducing reliance on foreign funding.

Plans are now underway to expand similar initiatives to the Nile Delta, further spreading innovation across the country.

The shift is expected to create a more balanced tech ecosystem, offering founders broader access to funding without relocating to Cairo.
