Edo's Bold Move: Senator Ikpea Endorses Special Courts Against Kidnapping and Cultism

Senator Joseph Ikpea, representing the Edo Central Senatorial District, has vocally endorsed Governor Monday Okpebholo's strategic plan to establish a special court dedicated to the expedited trial of suspected kidnappers and cultists in Edo State. Senator Ikpea lauded this initiative as a decisive and crucial step towards effectively addressing the pervasive insecurity challenges within the state.

In a statement released on Friday from his country home in Ewatto, Esan South-East Local Government Area, Senator Ikpea extended his commendation to Governor Okpebholo for his unwavering support to security agencies and his resolute commitment to restoring peace and safety across Edo State. He specifically highlighted and praised the recent successful crackdown on kidnapping syndicates, which notably resulted in the safe rescue of a woman who had been abducted from the Vegetable Market in Benin City, coupled with the arrest of one of the suspected perpetrators involved in the crime.

Earlier reports indicated that the Edo State Police Command had paraded several individuals suspected of kidnapping, including an alleged member of the gang implicated in the Vegetable Market abduction. During this parade, Governor Okpebholo formally announced his administration's intentions to facilitate the establishment of a specialized court. The primary objective of this court will be to significantly fast-track the prosecution processes for cases involving kidnapping and cult-related offenses, ensuring swift justice.

Furthermore, Governor Okpebholo reaffirmed his commitment to upholding the law by pledging to sign death warrants for convicted kidnappers, in strict accordance with existing legal frameworks. He also took the opportunity to commend the swift and professional response of security operatives involved in the recent rescue operation, announcing a substantial monetary reward of N10 million for the officers who demonstrated exemplary service.

Responding to these pivotal developments, Senator Ikpea characterized the governor’s directives to security agencies as both timely and highly effective. He stated, “Governor Okpebholo’s prompt directive to the Edo police to apprehend those responsible for the Vegetable Market kidnapping, and the swift response that led to the rescue of the victim and arrest of a suspect, is highly commendable.” He emphasized that the governor's decisive actions send an unequivocal and strong message to criminal elements operating within the state, while simultaneously reassuring residents of the government’s profound commitment to safeguarding their security and well-being. “The governor’s prompt action signals clearly that criminal elements have no safe haven in Edo State and serves as a confidence booster for citizens,” Ikpea added.

The lawmaker also took the opportunity to reaffirm his steadfast readiness to actively collaborate with the state government and various other stakeholders to continuously enhance the overall security landscape across Edo State. He articulated, “As the senator representing Edo Central, I remain committed to working with the state government and my colleagues across the senatorial districts to ensure the safety of our people.”

Finally, Senator Ikpea earnestly urged all residents of Edo State to actively support and participate in ongoing security efforts by diligently providing useful and timely information to law enforcement agencies. He emphatically stressed that robust community participation is an absolutely vital component in the comprehensive strategy to combat crime effectively. He concluded with a powerful statement: “When everyone is involved in the business of security, criminal elements will either repent or relocate because they will realise that Edo State is no longer a safe haven for criminals.”
