Ebola Horror Spreads: WHO Declares Global Emergency as DRC Death Toll Mounts, Kenya on High Alert!

The World Health Organization (WHO) has officially declared an Ebola outbreak in the eastern Ituri province of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) a public health emergency of international concern. This designation, representing the second-highest alert level under international health regulations, was made as fears of wider regional spread escalated. Despite the grave situation, the agency clarified that the outbreak does not currently meet the criteria for a pandemic emergency.
The current outbreak is caused by the Bundibugyo virus, a strain for which there are no approved drugs or vaccines, making treatment and prevention particularly challenging. Initial reports indicated around 246 suspected cases and 80 deaths. However, subsequent updates from the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC Africa) reported 88 deaths and 336 suspected cases of the highly contagious haemorrhagic fever. Laboratory tests confirmed Ebola infection in 13 out of 20 samples in Ituri Province, with specific confirmed cases noted across three health zones, including Bunia (the provincial capital), Mongwalu, and Rwampara.
The virus's spread beyond the DRC border raised significant alarms. Two confirmed cases were reported in neighbouring Uganda, with one 59-year-old man, a Congolese national, testing positive and subsequently dying. Further exacerbating concerns, a case was confirmed in the major eastern DRC city of Goma on Sunday. This involved the wife of a man who died of Ebola in Bunia, who travelled to Goma while already infected, highlighting the critical risk posed by population mobility, trade, and travel in the region. The WHO noted significant uncertainties regarding the true number of infected persons and the full geographic spread, but the high positivity rate of initial samples and cross-border confirmations suggest a potentially much larger outbreak.
DR Congo's Health Minister, Samuel-Roger Kamba, emphasized the severity of the Bundibugyo strain, stating it has a very high lethality rate, potentially reaching 50 percent. This contrasts with the Zaire strain, identified in 1976, for which vaccines are available and which typically has a higher fatality rate of 60-90 percent. Patient zero in the current outbreak was identified as a nurse who reported to a health facility in Bunia on April 24 with Ebola-like symptoms. The challenges in containing the spread are compounded by a lack of proper isolation facilities and poor communication infrastructure in the vast country.
In response, the WHO advised both DR Congo and Uganda to establish emergency operation centers for monitoring, tracing, and implementing infection-prevention measures. It recommended immediate isolation and treatment of confirmed cases until two Bundibugyo virus-specific tests, conducted at least 48 hours apart, yield negative results. Countries bordering affected regions were urged to enhance surveillance and health reporting, while the WHO reiterated that restricting borders or trade is not scientifically justified and should be avoided. Medical aid groups like Doctors Without Borders (MSF) have also mobilized a large-scale response, expressing extreme concern over the rapid spread.
Kenya's Ministry of Health has placed its county governments on heightened alert due to the regional outbreak, directing urgent preparedness and response measures to prevent possible cross-border transmission. An advisory from Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni Muriuki emphasized the significant regional public health risk posed by high population movement across East Africa. Interventions include intensified screening at all entry points (airports, land borders, seaports), strengthening community surveillance, ensuring health facilities are alert with ready isolation units and trained healthcare workers, and bolstering laboratory preparedness for specimen handling and diagnostics. The Ministry also stressed the importance of robust Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) measures and intensive public awareness campaigns to counter misinformation and engage community leaders in disseminating accurate health information. As of the advisory, Kenya had no confirmed or suspected cases but acknowledged its risk due to cross-border movement.
Ebola, first discovered in 1976 in what is now DR Congo, is thought to have originated from bats. This marks the 17th outbreak of the deadly viral disease in the country. The virus spreads through direct contact with bodily fluids, broken skin, contaminated materials, or infected wildlife. Symptoms include sudden fever, muscle pain, fatigue, headache, and sore throat in early stages, followed by vomiting, diarrhoea, a rash, and severe bleeding and organ failure. The incubation period can last up to 21 days. Over the past 50 years, Ebola has killed approximately 15,000 people in Africa, with mortality rates ranging from 25 percent to 90 percent across different outbreaks, despite advancements in vaccines and treatment for certain strains.
