Dua Lipa's Emotional Tour Finale in Mexico Honors Selena

Dua Lipa concluded her successful Radical Optimism Tour on Friday, December 5th, in Mexico City, delivering three sold-out shows at the iconic GNP Seguros Stadium. The British pop sensation wrapped up her 92-show global tour in an atmosphere brimming with nostalgia and emotion, marked by heartfelt tributes to Latin music icons and deep connections with her Mexican fanbase.
A highlight of her final night was Lipa's rendition of "Amor Prohibido," a classic by the Queen of Tex-Mex, Selena Quintanilla. Lipa expressed a profound "very special connection" with Selena, attributing it to their shared experience of dual nationality. Speaking in Spanish to the 65,000 attendees, she elaborated, "I chose this song because I feel a very special connection with this artist and with her feeling of belonging to two places at the same time. It’s something I deeply identify with, as I feel I am both Albanian and English, just as she was Mexican and American." Born in London to Albanian-Kosovar parents in 1995, the same year of Selena's death, Lipa solidified her family roots by obtaining Albanian citizenship in 2022, mirroring Selena's Mexican heritage and American birth.
The Mexican leg of her tour was replete with significant gestures. During her first night back in Mexico on Monday, December 1st, Lipa surprised the audience with a performance of Consuelo Velázquez's classic "Bésame Mucho," using the version famously recorded by Luis Miguel in 1997. This gesture was publicly acknowledged two days later by the Mexican superstar himself on social media. While the final show didn't feature special guests like Tuesday's performance with Fher Olvera from Maná, where they dueted on "Oye Mi Amor," Lipa's powerful stage presence electrified the stadium to the rhythm of Selena's music.
Fan interactions further underscored Lipa's connection with Mexico. Attendees enthusiastically chanted, "¡Dua, hermana, ya eres mexicana!" (Dua, sister, you're already Mexican!), in appreciation of her tributes. On Friday, following the World Cup draw, a fan presented Lipa with a jersey of the Mexican National Team. The team's official X account responded, celebrating the moment: "One beauty with another beauty! Dua Lipa posed with our new jersey and gifted us this spectacular snapshot. The British singer and us are levitating with World Cup excitement."
Beyond the stage, Lipa's return to Mexico City included several immersive experiences. Her record label organized a temporary themed taqueria in a popular tourist neighborhood, and she hosted the first Latin American session of Service 95, her digital newsletter for book recommendations and author interviews, at a local bookstore. She also took time to explore the city's vibrant culture and cuisine with friends and family, sharing these moments on her social media. Expressing her gratitude in Spanish during her final show, which collectively drew 195,000 people across the three nights, Lipa said, "Thank you so much for welcoming us with open arms and for this energy that I will carry with me until next time."
The Radical Optimism Tour, which commenced in Singapore in November 2024 and extended through 2025 across Australia, Europe, North America, and Latin America, was characterized by overwhelming fan euphoria. Throughout the tour, Lipa explored each city, performing surprise covers of local artists that fostered unique connections with her diverse fanbase, making each stop a culturally rich and unforgettable experience.
