US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is set to visit Beijing alongside President Donald Trump, marking a significant diplomatic development given Rubio's history of being under Chinese sanctions. This breakthrough appears to have been facilitated by China's decision to alter the transliteration of his name.

As a US Senator, Marco Rubio was a vocal champion for human rights in China, a stance that led Beijing to impose sanctions on him twice. These sanctions, which notably included an entry ban, mirrored tactics often employed by the US against its adversaries, highlighting the contentious nature of their past interactions.

A diplomatic workaround emerged after President Trump appointed Rubio as his Secretary of State. Shortly before Rubio assumed office in January 2025, the Chinese government and official media began utilizing a different Chinese character for the 'lu' syllable in his surname. Two diplomats, speaking to AFP, indicated their belief that this linguistic adjustment was a deliberate move by China to circumvent the existing sanctions tied to his previous name transliteration.
