Democracy Under Threat? Atiku Alleges Plot To Subvert Nation, Cites 'Natasha' Link

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has voiced grave concerns regarding the administration of President Bola Tinubu, accusing it of orchestrating a deliberate scheme to subvert Nigeria's democracy and undermine the populace's mandate. These serious allegations were made in response to the recent development involving the unsealing of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s office in the Senate, an act Atiku described as a welcome, albeit belated, prevalence of reason.
While acknowledging the positive resolution for Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, Abubakar lamented the irretrievable loss of valuable time for the people of Kogi Central, asserting nonetheless that the sustained struggle had not been in vain. He took to his official X handle to underscore his conviction, stating, "It has proven, once again, that when we stand together, we can triumph over tyranny." This statement reflects a broader sentiment against what he perceives as tyrannical tendencies within the current political landscape.
Abubakar contextualized the unsealing of the senator’s office as part of a larger pattern, linking it to other contentious events. He specifically cited the suspension of Governor Simi Fubara and several lawmakers in the Rivers State House of Assembly, along with the broader "unlawful suspension" of Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan herself. He further alleged a systemic "weaponisation of state institutions" designed to harass, intimidate, and silence opposition voices. According to Atiku, these actions are not random but rather "deliberate markers of the Tinubu administration’s strategy as 2027 approaches." He unequivocally stated that the ultimate goal is "to subvert our hard-earned democracy and compromise the will of the people at any cost."
In a resolute declaration, the former Vice President affirmed his commitment, stating, "on our part, we shall do everything legitimate and within the bounds of the law to protect our democracy, defend the sovereignty of the people’s mandate, and rescue our nation from the grip of authoritarianism." This pledge highlights his determination to resist what he characterizes as an authoritarian trajectory and to uphold democratic principles in Nigeria.
